The Hemingway boys basketball team defeated the Latta Vikings Thursday, February 11, in overtime action 66-56 to claim the Region 8-A title. Jordan Porchea scored 16 points to lead his team and Darius Williams added 11.
The opening tip-off was controlled by Latta. After a few missed shots, #23 for Hemmingway hit a long 3-pointer for Hemingway’s first lead of the game. Latta’s Diez Mungo lost control of the ball but quickly grabbed it and sank one for Latta for 2 points to put Latta on the scoreboard. Tyquan Porter went the distance and laid one in for 2 points to give Latta a 4-3 lead. Jordan Sims hit one for 2 points for Latta ; this closed the gap to 4 before #11 for Hemingway connected for 2 points.  Hemingway’s #23 quickly hit a 3-pointer. Latta’s Tyquan Porter attempted a long 3 as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter with Hemingway leading 15-8.
The second quarter began with #3 and #23 for Hemingway each attempting to hit a 3-pointer before Latta’s Kartilus McFadden hit one for 3 points. Hemingway had an 8 point lead in the second quarter after #3 hit a 3-pointer. The Vikings Tyquan Porter sank 1 of 2 free throws to bring Latta within 7 of Hemingway with 4:25 left in the second quarter. Hemingway’s #23 sank a basket while in heavy traffic. Kartilus McFadden sank a long 3 for Latta. With less than 2 minutes in the first half, #10 for Hemingway goes high over Jordan Sims to connect for 2 points; he was also fouled. Latta’s Kartilus McFadden hit on 1 of his 2 free throws before powering up and scoring another 2 points. The first half ended with Hemingway up 31-20.
The Vikings’ Diez Mungo hit a 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds in regulation play to send the game to overtime where Hemingway pulled away to claim the Region 8-A titles and only 1 loss in conference play.
