8U All Star Tournament Continues in Dillon

Sumter’s #15 hits one over second and scores.

The 8U All Star tournament continued at Dillon Recreation on Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20, with Johnsonville claiming big wins.

On Wednesday, Johnsonville took a 6-0 lead over Lamar in the first inning. An inside the park home run put Johnsonville up 11-0 in the second and they held a 13-0 lead by the end of the inning. Lamar took the field in the top of the third, but couldn’t get anything going with outs at bat and on a line drive to first.

Sumter got a 12-0 win over Hannah-Pamplico, leading 6-0 in the top of the second inning. Sumter started off the bottom of the inning with a double and scored on a grounder to lead 7-0. The next batter hit a short one into the field and ended up on second, but Sumter got their second out when the following batter flew out to the short stop. Sumter’s #27 then hit one up the middle for a RBI, #44 hit one by the shortstop, #7 hit one up the middle and scored, and #15 hit one up the middle to score to put Sumter up 12-0. Hannah-Pamplico went to bat in the top of the third, hitting a grounder to second to get a runner on third, but a second grounder resulted in a fielder’s choice that got the runner out at second. A grounder to first resulted in the second out, but #5 hit a short one to the pitcher to make it safely to first. But a pop up from the next batter ended the game.

Darlington also took on Turbeville on Wednesday for a 12-8 win. Darlington led 8-4 after three innings, but Turbeville hit a grounder to third to score a runner and Turbeville’s #2 hit one by first to pick up another RBI to trail 8-7 after three. Darlington picked up a run in the top of the fourth and led 12-7 by the end of the inning. Turbeville scored one more in the bottom of the ending for a 12-8 finish.

On Thursday, Turbeville took on Marlboro County for a 19-6 win, while Johnsonville defeated Sumter 25-16 in a high-scoring game. Johnsonville led 18-9 after three innings and increased the lead to 25-9 by in the top of the fourth. Sumter’s #3 hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the inning and #14 hit a grounder to pick up another RBI. Sumter’s #15 hit a fly over the pitcher to make it safely to first, and after three hits in a row, including two inside the park homers, Sumter trailed 25-16, with the game ending with that score.

Darlington and Hartsville closed out the evening. Hartsville led 7-2 in the top of the second, but Darlington tied things 7-7 by the end of the second.

The tournament was scheduled to continue on Monday but was postponed until tonight because of the weather. Two games are scheduled for tonight at 6:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Dillon was in first place headed into tonight’s games, and if they win, they will advance to Wednesday night’s championship game at 6:00 p.m. If Dillon loses, another game will be held at 6, followed by the championship game after a 30 minute break.
