Lady Vikings Down Top-Ranked Flashes 4-0, Fall 3-0 to 4A Knights

Latta’s Lady Vikings scored a 4-0 win over the top-ranked Johnsonville Flashes on Wednesday, but fell 3-0 to the West Florence Knights on Friday in varsity softball action.

In the Wednesday, March 13, game, Latta and Johnsonville held each other of until the top of the third, when Latta scored their first run for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Vikings ran in three more in the fifth to seal the win.

Anna Rogers pitched a complete game one-hitter to lead the Vikings, striking out 13 and walking two. Ashley Hanna took the loss for Johnsonville, pitching seven innings for eight hits, four runs, and four earned runs with five outs and two hit by pitch.

Tori Grimsley and Macy Hyatt each went 2-for-4 for the Vikings with Grimsley picking up a RBI, while Madison Owens went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Raven Baxley also went 1-for-3, with one RBI.

Johnsonville’s Hanna led the Flashes at bat, getting their only hit of the game as she went 1-for-2.

The Flashes, who were ranked first in the recent Class A state coaches poll, slipped to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the region with the loss. The Lady Vikings, who were ranked fourth in the poll, opened region play with the win for a 1-0 record in Region 8-A.

On Friday, March 15, the Lady Vikings traveled to West Florence for a non-region game against the Lady Knights, who scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning in their 3-0 win.

Sarah Locklair pitched all seven innings for the Knights, allowing five hits while striking out four. Anna Rogers pitched six innings for Latta, allowing two hits, three runs, one earned run, and three walks with 15 outs.

Macy Hyatt went 2-for-3 with a double at bat for the Lady Vikings, and Tori Webster went 2-for-3. Latta had five hits and two errors in the loss.

Claire McKay went 1-for-3 with a RBI to lead West Florence and Abby Kennedy went 1-for-3 for the Knights. West Florence had two hits and one error in the win.

The Vikings finished the week with a 5-5 overall record and a 1-0 in Region 8-A.

Latta will host Johnsonville tonight and Green Sea-Floyds this Friday, March 22. Both games start at 5:30 p.m.
