Vikings Open Region Play with Wins

The Latta Vikings opened region play last week with a 7-4 win over Johnsonville and double-header wins over Creek Bridge.

On Wednesday, the Vikings traveled to Johnsonville where they got off to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and improved to 3-0 in the top of the third. The Flashes got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 3-2, and both teams added one run in the fifth. The Vikings scored again in the sixth and added two runs in the seventh to pull ahead 7-3, and the Flashes added one last run in the bottom of the inning for the 7-4 final score.

John Kever Love picked up the win for Latta, pitching four innings with six hits, to runs, one walk, and five outs. Jonathan Long took the loss for Johnsonville, pitching six innings for nine hits, five runs, two walks, and three outs.

Donell Stanley led the Vikings at bat, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Josh Bowen and Jackson Williams each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Latta had 14 hits and one error in the win.

Colin Barnhill led Johnsonville, going 3-for-4 with a RBI, with Jay Newell going 2-for-4 for the Flashes. Johnsonville had seven hits and three errors.

Latta improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the region, while Johnsonville slips to 1-3 and 1-1 in Region 8-A.

On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Creek Bridge for a double header, shutting out the Warriors 17-0 and 12-0 in three-innings each.

In game one, Latta took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, adding three runs in the second and eight in the third for a 17-0 run-ruled win in three innings.

Jeremy Jenkins pitched three innings with no hits and eight outs for the win. Creek Bridge’s Powell took the loss, pitching three innings for 10 hits, 17 runs, 12 earned runs, eight walks, and one out.

Aubrey Brunson went 2-for-3 to lead Latta at bat, picking up three RBIs, and Chase Ray went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Austin Miller also went 2-for-2 as the Vikings made 10 hits in the win.

Creek Bridge had no hits and four errors in game one.

In game two, Latta scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to end the game in two and a half innings.

Latta’s Chandler Morrell pitched three innings for the Vikings for two hits, two walks, and two outs. Creek Bridge’s Hucks took the loss, pitching two innings for nine hits, 12 runs, three earned runs, three walks, and five outs.

Brandon Moultrie went 2-for-2 with a triple at bat for Latta; J.R. Rich went 2-for-3 with two RBIs; and Jackson Williams went 2-for-3. Latta had nine hits in the win, while Creek Bridge had two hits and six errors.

The Vikings improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 8-A.

Latta was scheduled to host Johnsonville on Tuesday and Green Sea-Floyds on Friday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
