During a hard-fought game, the Latta Lady Vikings dropped one in the later innings 10-5 to the Hartsville Lady Red Foxes in varsity softball action played in Hartsville on Thursday, April 19.
Latta took the first lead of the game a run scored in the top of the first inning. However, it was short-lived as Hartsville placed 2 runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Latta knotted the game at 2 in the top of the third inning. Hartsville responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Latta once again knotted the score at 4 in the top of the fifth inning. The bottom of the sixth inning proved too much for the Latta Lady Vikings as Hartsville scored 6 runs, and the Latta Lady Vikings were unable to respond with that many runs. However, the Lady Vikings did score a run in the top of the seventh inning. Hartsville managed 11 hits in the game while holding Latta to 6. Latta committed 6 errors in the game while Hartsville committed 3 errors.
Arica Gandy started the game for Latta. She pitched 5.2 innings and gave up 10 hits, walked 1, struck out 4, and allowed 10 runs of which 3 were earned. Jayla Jackson was tagged with the loss. She pitched 0.1 inning and gave up 1 hit, and walked 1. Liz Stroud started the game for Hartsville. She pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 5 hits, walked 1, struck out 7, and allowed 4 runs of which 3 were earned. Taylor Watford was credited with the win. She pitched 1.2 innings and gave up 1 hit and 1 earned run. Latta’s Madison Owens hit a home run, a double, picked up 2 rbi, and scored 3 runs in her 4 at-bats while Kyra Grant hit a triple, picked up a rbi, and scored a run in her 3 at-bats. Riana Green singled in her 3 at-bats. Kaleigh Caulder singled and picked up a rbi in her 2 at-bats. Lauren Webster singled in her 2 at-bats. Hartsville’s Quita Joyner hit a triple, a single, picked up 3 rbi, and scored a run in her 4 at-bats while Sidney McInnis connected for 2 singles, 2 rbi, and scored a run in her 3 at-bats. Taylor Watford hit a single, a double, picked up a rbi, and scored 2 runs in her 4 at-bats. Jessica McWhorter hit a home run, picked up 2 rbi, and scored 2 runs in her 4 plate appearances.
