Category: Bill Lee’s Columns

The musings and memories of the late W.C. “Bill” Lee, a retired teacher, a professional photographer, community volunteer, columnist for The Dillon Herald, church officer and pianist, and one who served in other leadership roles. His wit and wisdom are truly missed, but can be re-lived in this series of columns.

You Called?

I recently wrote about my first (c. 1938) up close encounter with a real airplane, one that had an emergency landing near my home.

Old

Sometimes when we want to define something and we lack the words, we fall back on defining the word by saying what the word is NOT.

Remember?

The principal link we have to connect us with the past is our memory.  Obviously if it were a past experience, it’s mostly gone except for the mental pictures of it that we store in our minds usually easily recalled on demand.

The First Time

There can only be one FIRST time although it can be repeated endlessly but never initially. Important and many unimportant first events in life can be recalled vividly even years from their occurrences.

Grand Daddy

Someone has said that while a child only gets just one Daddy in life, he gets double that with granddaddies, one from his dad’s father and another from his mother’s father.

Natural Gifts

You can thank your parents and past generations for the natural gifts you possess although that does not mean the gifts are automatically yours without any effort on your part, mostly.

Out Of Breath

A sign of intelligence or desperation is when one is faced with a problem he thinks ‘out of the box’ for solutions especially when normal, immediate answers are not readily available?

Common Sense

Tuesday is the day his weekly housekeeper comes which causes him to slightly alter his method of securing his home when he departs for his morning duties.

Good Samaritan

A resident in a health facility in the ninth decade of her life had a fall and needed to be transferred to the local hospital.

The Last Rites

I am a Presbyterian and in addition to the question of predestination, a belief of ‘what will be, will be’ the denomination is known for carrying out its affairs “decently and in order” as the saying goes. This is generally true for most of the church services I attend.
