The Latta Empowerment Senior Citizens group has been giving back to the community for several years using their knitting skills.
This group gathers together on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to knit hats for the students enrolled at Latta Elementary School. On Monday, George Liebenrood (Superintendent), Deidra Jones (Assistant Principal), and other staff members met with the group to view the hand knitted toboggans of various colors, designs, and sizes. At that time, a total of 142 toboggans were presented to Latta Elementary School. School leaders and teachers have already determined a list of students that are in need this holiday season. Each student will be given a toboggan before the long break. The group has been knitting hats for the past six years, resulting in over 1,000 hats being donated. The students love receiving these hand-made hats and the community is stronger because their contribution. With this event, it becomes difficult to determine who is happier: the preschooler or the senior citizen. Addie Pendergrass, and John Spears.
