Dillon County 4-H Shooting Club Members Compete In State Qualifier

Ten members of the Dillon County 4-H shooting sports program competed in a skeet shooting event to qualify to compete for the State Championship. The club has about 25 members this year, but other obligations and lack of experience kept some from attending.

On Saturday, October 20, 4-H skeet shooting events were held across South Carolina. The top shooters from across the state will be invited to compete at Mid-Carolina in Orangeburg in November to determine the State Champions in each division. The five qualifying events were held at the Pickens Bend Range near Clemson, Mid-Carolina in Orangeburg, Moree’s Sportsman Preserve in Society Hill, the SCDNR Wateree Range near Sumter, and Partridge Creek towards Charleston. Shooters competed in different divisions according to their school grades. Competitors in the 10th-12th grades competed in the Sr. Division unless this was their first year of shooting. Any new competitive shooters in those grades, plus all 9th graders shot in the JV. Division. Experienced shooters in the 7th and 8th grades shot in the Intermediate Advanced Division. New shooters in those grades and all 6th graders shot in the Intermediate First Year Division. All shooters in the 4th and 5th graders shot in the Rookie Division. Female shooters shot in these same divisions but also in Ladies’ Classes. The Dillon County team had shooters in every division except for the Intermediate first year. As this was a qualifying event, each shooter competed individually and not as a team. The high shooter for the Dillon County team was Gavin Grant, as he crushed 75 out of 100 targets. Gavin is in the Intermediate Advanced division. Julian Robinson was the 2nd highest team member, following closely, breaking 73 out of 100. Julian is in the Sr. Division. In the JV Division, Zane Sawyer broke 65, as did Daniel Jones, who is in the Intermediate Advanced Division. Also, in the Intermediate Advanced Division, Jake Davis scored 61, and Harris George scored 58. Dillon County has three new competitors who are all in the 5th grade in the Rookie Division. Landen Cole led this group by breaking 41. Weston Covington broke 34, and Evan Harrison got 31. Adelle Ward shoots with Dillon County as our only female competitor. She is in the JV Ladies division and broke 37 out of 100 targets. The top 15 shooters from each division are invited back to shoot in the State Championship Match, which will be held at Mid-Carolina in November. Gavin Grant and Landen Cole will represent our 4-H shooting Club later this month. We wish them luck and thank them for representing Dillon County 4-H! Dillon 4-H would like to thank club leader Bill Aston and 4-H volunteer Ray George for making this club possible for Dillon County youth!
