George Edwin Sherwood

George Edwin Sherwood, son of local Baptist missionaries and former Dillon resident, passed away on May 20, 2023, aged 93.

The fifth of ten children of Wattie Bethea and Eunice Allen Sherwood, George was born and raised in Brazil and moved to Dillon County with his family in 1942. He attended Dillon High School before finishing high school at North Greenville Baptist Academy in Tigerville. After attending Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, George served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. He then moved to Texas, where he would spend the majority of his life, earning four college degrees, meeting the love of his life, Dolores, raising their four children and working as a mechanical engineer at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. After retirement, George and Dolores moved to Dillon in 1996, living in Ben Bernanke’s boyhood home on Jefferson Street, looking after the Sherwood ancestral farm, tending the pecan orchard and making many friends at church. However, the lure of grandchildren proved too strong, and in 2005 they moved to Boerne, Texas, where George would spend the rest of his life. A devoted friend and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, he is dearly missed by all.
The family will hold a private graveside service at Mission Park Funeral Chapels and Cemetery Dominion in San Antonio.
