The Latta Lady Vikings shut out the Carvers Bay Lady Bears 10-0 in varsity softball District 6 playoff action held in Latta on Friday, May 5.
Carvers Bay’s Jenna Kay Avant managed a lead-off single to left prior to Maddie Berry striking out the following 2 batters and the last out of the top of the first inning was accomplished on a bunt to retire the side.
Latta’s Jenna Stutler garnered a walk and quickly stole second. After a fly-out, Stutler moved to third on a passed ball. Maddie Berry’s sac fly allowed Stutler to cross home plate for the first score of the evening. After 1 inning of play, Latta was up 1-0.
In the fourth inning, Latta managed to score 9 runs with walks by Erika Roberts, Elizabeth Brown, and Maddie Berry, and singles by Jena Stutler and Ragan Bethea, and a double by Katelyn Johnson.
Latta’s Maddie Berry picked up the win in the run-ruled 5-inning game. She pitched 5 innings and allowed only 1 hit, walked 1, struck out 9, and did not allow a run.
The Lady Bears’ Jenna Kay Avant pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 5, and allowed 7 runs of which 5 were earned. Kylie McCants pitched 0.2 inning and allowed 2 hits, walked 4, struck out no one, and allowed 3 earned runs.
Latta’s Katelyn Johnson had a double, 2 rbi, and scored a run in her 3 at-bats. Jena Stutler had a single, a walk, a rbi, and scored 2 runs in her 3 plate appearances. Ragan Bethea had a single, a walk, 2 rbi, and scored a run in her 3 plate appearances. Averi Lovell had a single and scored a run in her 3 at-bats. Samantha Townsend had a walk, a rbi, and scored a run in her 3 plate appearances. Maddie Berry had a walk and a rbi in her 3 plate appearances. Elizabeth Brown had a walk and a rbi in her 3 plate appearances. Erika Roberts had 3 walks and scored a run in her 3 plate appearances. Chayse Walters had a walk in her 3 plate appearances. Hendley Ann McIntyre, Mason Lockamy, and Emily Smith each scored a run in the game.
Carvers Bay committed 2 errors in the game while Latta did not commit an error.
Latta is 19-5 overall.
