The Dillon Lady Wildcats defeated the visiting Gilbert Lady Indians 10-6 in varsity softball action played in Dillon on Wednesday, April 12, with Paige Sherman on the mound for Dillon.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday. However, the game was moved to Wednesday due to the predicted inclement weather for Friday.
After 2 scoreless innings of play, the Gilbert Lady Indians’ Isabella Adams popped one over Dillon’s pitcher’s head and arrived safely at first. Carlie Melton hit one over second for a single to place runners on first and second with 1 out. Gilbert’s #0 drove 1 to right for a triple and 2 rbi to give the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead over the Lady Wildcats in the top of the third inning.
Dillon’s first score of the evening came in the bottom of the fourth inning on a triple by Logan Grice followed by a sac fly to right by Makayla Huggins to cut Gilbert’s lead to 1 run, 2-1. Dillon loaded the bases but were unable to get a run across home plate.
With 2 outs, Gilbert added a run in the top of the fifth. A grounder by Gilbert’s #7 for a single followed by a grounder by third by Gilbert’s #0 allowed #7 to cross home plate to give Gilbert a 3-1 lead.
Cierra Grice lead off with a stand-up double in the bottom of the fifth inning followed by a grounder to second by Logan Grice that allowed a run to score. Makenna Meekins garnered a walk to place runners on first and second with no outs. A grounder by Makayla Huggins allowed a run to score to tie the game at 3 each. Paige Sherman hit a hot grounder up the middle for a single and a rbi to give Dillon a 4-3 lead. Mariah Campbell hist a grounder that scored Paige Sherman to give Dillon a 5-3 lead after 5 innings of play.
Gilbert loaded the bases with no outs and managed to get 3 runs across in the top of the sixth to lead Dillon 6-5.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Dillon placed 5 runs in the scoreboard to lead 10-6.
Paige Sherman picked up the win. She pitched 7 innings and allowed 11 hits, 6 runs, struck out 11, and walked 1.
Adams took the loss for Gilbert. She allowed 12 hits, 10 runs, struck out 4, and walked 3.
The Dillon Lady Wildcats did not commit an error in the game.
Dillon’s Paige Sherman had 3 hits, a rbi, and scored a run in 4 at-bats. Erika Williamson had 2 singles, 2 rbi, and scored a run in 4 at-bats. Cierra Grice had a single, a double, a rbi, and scored 2 runs in 4 at-bats. Logan Grice had a triple, a walk, and scored a run in 3 at-bats. Makayla Huggins had a single and 3 rbi in her 3 at-bats. Makenna Meekins had a single, a walk, and scored 2 runs in 2 at-bats. Alyssa Lee had a single, a walk, and a rbi in 3 at-bats. Jiana McGill had a single and scored a run in 4 at-bats.
Gilbert’s Whatley had 3 singles and scored a run in 4 at-bats. Leaphart had a double, a triple, and 3 rbi in 4 at-bats. Melton had 2 singles and scored a run in 4 at-bats. Baty had a single, 2 rbi, scored a run, and was hit by a pitch in 3 at-bats. Adams had a single, a rbi, and scored a run in 4 at-bats. Brown had a single, a walk, was hit by a pitch, and score a run in 2 at-bats. Sprague had a single in 4 at-bats.
Gilbert is 11-4 overall and 8-0 in AAA Region 5 in first place.
Dillon will travel to Waccamaw today, Tuesday, April 18, for a 6:30 p.m. game.
