DHSF Holds May Meeting

By NaTalia McLeod
The May meeting of Dillon Historical School Foundation (DHSF) was held on Tuesday, May 3, at the Dillon Chamber of Commerce Offices.
Chairman Gerald Berry called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., the summer meeting hour. Vice-Chairman, Terry Morris, led the meeting with an invocation followed by the Secretary’s report. At this meeting, the secretary also gave the treasurer’s report in the treasurer’s absence, as he is dealing with minor health issues. Prior to this meeting, concerns had been expressed about having an additional member assist with treasurer duties.
Following the update on the Treasurer and the Treasurer’s Report, a nomination was for a replacement was made. All members present voted in favor of the nominee. After this, the meeting moved along according to the agenda.
The next thing discussed was unfinished business which included Insurance, Roof Repairs, treatment of mildew and revision(s) of the by-laws. During the discussion of unfinished business, conversation about Historic Marker Unveiling Ceremony arose. One member spoke adamantly about making the marker a top priority whether or not there was a ceremony. All members agree, however, a majority would like to have a small ceremony commemorating this moment.
A committee has been formed and they are working to set a date. Details of the event will be posted in the Dillon Herald as well as the DHSF Facebook page. Another major concern discussed during the meeting, although not listed on the agenda, is the maintenance of the grounds and the cleaning of The JVM Auditorium. It is understood that “Appearances are a glimpse of the unseen”; when people see our work and maintenance of the outside the will become more interested and supportive of our work on the inside of the buildings.
Reports under New Business covered Letters to Local Businesses and Industries, an update on City Accommodations Tax Application, Terms/Election of DHSF Board and Members opportunities to serve as Press/Finance Secretary. One member volunteered to work with Chairman Berry as a press secretary to ensure that the public is kept abreast of all of DHSF’s progress via the Dillon Herald and Facebook page.
The meeting adjourned with a reminder from Chairman Berry about next month’s meeting set for Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. to be held at the Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, Located on Main street in Dillon.
DHSF asks that any person’s interested in finding out what’s going with JVM Auditorium or the JVM Facility please join us at our monthly meeting.
