Dan E. Lockemy will be the Master of Ceremonies at “Celebrate Main Street.”
Dan E. (Danny) Lockemy is proud to be from the best place to live in the world, Dillon, South Carolina.
He grew up in Newtown. He is a 1972 graduate of Dillon High School. He attended Chowan College (1972-74) and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1977 with a B.A. in Journalism.
He is a Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brother. He is a sales executive and air personality with the iHeartMEDIA radio group in Florence.
Dan E. started in radio in 1978 at 860 WFMO-AM, the home of “the Original 3 Day Golden Weekend” working with radio greats like Dave Ballard, Mark Elliott, and the legendary late J.W. Pittman (mentor). Dan E. moved to WDSC-FM along with Mark Elliott in 1981 and worked afternoons. During this time he also worked in the family grocery store – Lockemy’s Grocery – in the Newtown community of Dillon.
“The legendary Dillon radio pioneer and sales executive, Lee Lumpkin, gave me my first real full time break in radio in the early 80s,” says Dan E. “Mark Elliott did mornings and I did afternoons on WDSC-FM before it was changed to WZNS-FM. We were given freedom to experiment and try different things to fit our personalities. I will always credit Mark Elliott for allowing me to develop my style on the air.”
His other heroes during the early years were Johnny Quick, John Stephens, “Dot” Fleming, Ginni Burden and everyone else who worked at WDSC during the early 80s.
Dan E. started doing beach music on the air in 1985 on WZNS-FM, Z-93. Then the show was called the Saturday Night B & O Show – Beach and Oldies.
The program officially became “AT THE BEACH” in 1987 and moved to Saturday afternoon. Dan E. took the title of the “Part-Time, Party-Time Man” (Futures song) because he did the show on Saturday (part-time) and help run the family grocery store, Lockemy’s Grocery, during the week. “AT THE BEACH with Dan E. Lockemy® was on the radio for more than 26 years. The show ended in September of 2013 because of a format change on WDAR-FM, SUNNY 105.5. But when it was on during those years, each Saturday afternoon “AT THE BEACH” would take you on an exciting convertible ride down Ocean Boulevard filling the airwaves with memorable beach and R & B tunes from the past and snappy beach ‘n shaggin’ party new releases.
That’s why young listeners and the forever young at heart loved to party every Saturday “AT THE BEACH” with the Carolina’s Part-Time, Party-Time Man, Dan E. Lockemy. Dan E.’s show feeds on the saturated memories of the fun times at the beach during Easter weekend and all summer long. Bringing back those days at the old Spanish Galleon with the sandy concrete floors through tunes like “39-21-46.”
Taking a road trip to the legendary Coachman and Four Club in Bennettsville to catch a memorable performance by the Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose. Conjuring up a summer romance on the pier while off in the background the faint sound of Billy Stewart’s “Sittin’ In The Park” drifts through the salty air. That’s what “AT THE BEACH” with Dan E. Lockemy® was all about.
From Sixty Minute Man to Mama’s Drinking Liquor, if you wanted a party then joining the “Part-Time, Party-Time Man,” Dan E. Lockemy every Saturday afternoon in the “beach house” was the place to be.
It was where the beach towels were flapping in the breeze and his favorite beach shirt was hangin’ by the door.
Plus a trash can full of beach, boogie, and shaggin’ beach tunes was waitin’ to be explored. “AT THE BEACH” with Dan E. Lockemy – it’s where memories were made on the radio.
Dan E. is still on the road doing parties and hosting festivals all over the Carolinas throughout the year. From weddings to porch and pool parties, a taste of “AT THE BEACH” still lives on across the region. One day it will return to the radio. “Stay Tuned.”
Dan E. was inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Award’s “Beach Music Hall Of Fame in 2008.
Dan E. also received the coveted Carolina Beach Music Award’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2000 and received recognition from The Association of Beach and Shag Club DJs.
He was inducted as an Honorary Hall of Fame member in 2007.
Dan E. also has a passion for stock car racing of all forms. He, along with Chip Wile, President of Darlington Raceway, host the very popular racing show “THAT’S RACING” every Monday night 7 till 8pm on WEGX-FM, EAGLE 92.9. Their co-host and “Racing Expert,” Rudy Branham, just passed away after a long illness.
Since 1994, he has enjoyed the duties of being the track PA announcer at NASCAR’s oldest and most prestigious track, Darlington Raceway.
Dan E. and his wife, Kim, reside in Florence.
Dan E. is the son of the late Nettie and Ed Lockemy of Dillon.
He has two children, Danielle and Jason.
