Q&A With Latta J.V. Softball Coach Jenny Melton

Q: How many years have you been coaching?
A. 2 years

Q. How many years have you been head coach?
A. 2 years

Q. What was your team’s record last season?
A. 6 and 1, defeating Green Sea Floyds, Dillon, and  Lake View. The girls offensively scored 77 runs and allowed 22 runs defensively to score at the plate last season.

Q. How many players did you lose from last year’s team?
A. 5 starters

Q. Do you have any new players who will fill the void?
A. Absolutely! Latta has so many talented  and athletic young women that continue working in-season and out of season to be the best they absolutely can.

Q. Do you have any new coaching staff members?
A. Yes.  Jake Hyatt of Latta will be my assistant coach this year.

Q. Did you lose any members of your coaching staff from last year?
A. Yes.  Tommy Moody of Dillon was my assistant JV coach last year.  He was a tremendous asset to the softball program at Latta and will be greatly missed by the girls and coaches.

Q. What key positions do you need to fill this year?
A. Key positions I need to fill this year include: two or three pitchers, two outfield positions, and potentially a catcher.    9. What is your expectation for this season? The expectation for this year is the same as last, take each game one at a time and give 110% on and off the field. If we all work to meet  and/or exceed these expectations then we will have another successful year.

Q. Do you have any new opponents for this year?
A. Yes. Hannah Pamplico, Johnsonville, and  Carver’s Bay

Q. Do you have any new talent on your team?
A. Yes.  This season we are adding 5-6 new  players.

Q. Who do you think will be your toughest opponent this year?
A. Since we have three new  opponents this year, I’m not sure who our toughest opponent will be. With that being said we are going to give each game 110% and take them one at a time.    13. At what positions do you have the most experience? Although third base was the place I felt the most at home on the diamond, pitching (primarily) and catching (when not pitching) are the two positions I have the most experience playing throughout high school.

Q. At what positions do you have the least experience?
A. Throughout Kiwanis baseball and middle/high school softball the outfield (any position) was somewhere I did not play a lot of.
