Latta Defeats Carvers Bay

By Craig Brown
Dillon County has not been a hospitable place for the Bears of Carvers Bay High School as they fell 20-16 to Lake View High School last week and went down 22-8 Friday night to the Vikings of Latta High School.
The Bears are down this year and although not considered a threat in division 1A for a serious playoff run, they still maintain their tradition of playing all-out aggressive style football.
The Vikings are also playing at a high level of intensity this season. It was this level of play that was likely the cause of numerous penalties on both teams in this game. One Viking player was ejected from the game. The referee explained that the infraction did not indicate that the player was out of control but due to the rules the infraction mandated his removal from the game.
Viking Coach Brandon Iseman also had to leave the game late in the fourth quarter after drawing his second un-sportsman like conduct penalty. Coach Iseman’s actions were due to his aggressive objections to some of the official’s calls. The coach was standing up for his players, but you have to be careful how you express your objections on Friday night.
One retired official once explained to me that the more senior referees are assigned to higher classes with division 1A varsity, JV and B-team programs getting the less experienced referees.
Hopefully, the young referees will learn how to position themselves to make better calls, if not they should remain in the lower class games or out completely.
The former official also informed me that sometimes senior officials choose to call small school games but they generally choose the higher level games. As fans we get angry at some of the calls but we need to understand that referees are human and subject to making mistakes, especially the less experienced ones. Coach Iseman was correct in questioning some of the calls but in the future may need to take the old count to ten before you speak approach.
On a positive note, Coach Iseman and his staff have the Vikings going for the best regular season finish in over 30 years.
The Vikings should be favored over Green Sea-Floyds Friday and a win would give them a 7-3 record and hopefully a first round home playoff game.
The Vikings ended their first offensive drive with quarterback Colby Lee hitting Tyreik McAllister with a 20 yard touchdown strike. Keegan Sherman’s point after kick put the Vikings up 7-0 with 9:06 left in the first quarter.
The Viking defense held the Bears and forced a punt. Jackson Williams blocked the kick to give the Viking offense good field position.
This time Lee finished the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Moultrie.
Sherman’s kick upped the Viking lead to 14-0 with 6:23 left in the first quarter.
The Viking kickoff went out of bounds giving the Bears the ball on their own 35-yard line. Bears quarterback Levi White handed off to running back Tyreek Reed who dodged a couple of tackles and broke loose on his way to a 65-yard touchdown run. The conversion attempt failed holding Latta’s lead to 14-6 with 6:09 left in the first quarter with the quarter ending with this score. With 17 seconds left in the second quarter, McAllister finished the drive with a one yard touchdown run and then added the two point conversion to give the Vikings a 22-6 lead with the first half ending with this score. The entire second half of play was a hard hitting no-score defensive battle.
With eight seconds left in the game the Vikings purposely allowed the Bears a two point safety to finish the games scoring with the Vikings taking the 22-8 region win. On offense for the Vikings, Kartilus McFadden had 159 yards rushing on 26 carries, Colby Lee was 5 of 13 passing for 76 yards and two touchdowns and had four yards rushing on two carries, Tyreik McAllister caught two passes for 30 yards and a touchdown and ran in a touchdown from one yard out adding a two point conversion run, Kendall Moultrie caught two passes for 32 yards and a touchdown, Tyquan Porter caught a pass for 14 yards and Keegan Sherman was 2 for 2 on point after kicks.
On defense for the Vikings, Davonte Porter had ten tackles, two assists a fumble recovery and an interception, Jackson Williams had six tackles, five assists with two blocked punts, Chandler Nolan had six tackles, five assists, Damien Braddy had five tackles, six assists, Sam Jackson and Tevin Dimery had had five tackles, four assists each, Jalen Gomillion had four tackles, four assists, Deonte Stanley and Gaige Sanderson had four tackles, two assists each, Kendall Moultrie had three tackles, five assists, a fumble recovery and an interception, Tyquan Porter and Mickey Dotson had three tackles, five assists each, Jay Bailey had two tackles, three assists, Tyreik McAllister and Jackson Power added a tackle each, Trey Manning had two tackle assists, Zyques Sellers and Blake Tyler added a tackle assist.
