Lake View Overcomes Three-Point Deficit For Hard Fought 54-41 Win Over Latta

The Lake View Wild Gators overcame a three point deficit with a little over three minutes to win 54-41 in a hard fought victory over the Latta Vikings.
The lead changed several times in the game, but Lake View scored the final fourteen points in the game to seal the victory
Lake View kicked off to Latta to start the game. Latta started a drive down the field. During the drive, #7 Colby Lee completed a pass to #2 Tyreik McAllister for six yards. Lee then completed another pass for a first down. #23 Kartilus McFadden was dropped for a three-yard loss followed by an incomplete pass by Lee. Lee then passed to get the first down.
Lee then threw for the end zone which was picked off by Lake View’s #4 Tyshawn McDaniel, who ran it out to Lake View’s own 19-yard line. Lake View’s #8 Delvon Bethea carried the ball for one yard. Lake View than made two more carries to get the first down. #21 Randall Washington carried the ball for five yards. #10 Duane Nichols carried the ball on the next play. Bethea got the ball on the next play but was stopped on third down. On fourth down, Lake View could not get the first down, and Latta took over on the 18-yard line.
#7 Colby Lee tossed a touchdown pass to #2 Tyreik McAllister, bringing Latta to a 6-0 lead with 4:31 left in the first quarter. Keegan Sherman kicked the point after touchdown which was good. Latta led Lake View, 7-0.
Lake View’s #33 De’Ante Bridgett carried the ball. #10 Duane Nichols bootlegged one in for six points. #8 Delvon Bethea was stopped on the two-point attempt. Lake View trailed Latta, 7-6, after the drive.
Latta got the ball back. #7 Colby Lee completed a pass to #2 Tyreik McAllister for the first down. #23 Kartilus McFadden carried the ball for one yard. Lee then completed another pass to McAllister. Another pass to McAllister resulted in a first down. Lee’s next pass was incomplete. Lee Then completed another pass to McAllister for another first down. Lee then ran the ball. His next pass was incomplete. Lee hit the end zone to get another six points for Latta as time expired in the first quarter. The point after touchdown was no good, so the Vikings led the Gators, 13-6.
Lake View and Latta then each had unsuccessful drives.
#24 Ottis Green kicked the punt to the Gators. The Gators started what would result in a successful drive down the field. #33 De’Ante Bridgett carried the ball for nine yards. #10 Duane Nichols carried the ball for a first down. Bridgett then made two carries, the latter being for three yards. Bridgett was then stopped for three yards and then dropped for a loss. Nichols then completed a pass in the end zone to #4 Tyshawn McDaniel, who was there alone, bringing the score to Latta-13, Lake View-12. Nichols completed a pass for the two-point conversion to Bridgett. Lake View took the lead 14-13 with 3:47 left in the half.
Latta answered with a touchdown by #2 Tyreik McAllister. Latta took back the lead 19-14. #55 Xavier “Rock” Johnson for Lake View intercepted the pass on the two-point conversion attempt so the score remained Latta, 19 – Lake View, 14, with 2:52 left in the first half.
#33 De’Ante Bridgett started off Lake View’s drive with a carry for a first down. #8 Delvon Bethea carried the ball for seven yards. #10 Duane Nichols was pursued as he attempted to pass. He threw to #1 Darius Ford, but the pass was incomplete. Bridgett carried the ball for the first down to Latta’s 1-yard line. Nichols passed to the end zone. Pass interference was called on Latta. With 26.4 seconds remaining in the first half, Nichols completed a pass to the five-yard line. Time expires on Lake View who was on the 4 1/2 yard line. At the half, Latta led Lake View, 19-14.
The Latta lead did not ruin the half-time festivities where the stadium was rededicated to Jesse Ford and the football field was dedicated to Coach Jewell McLaurin.
Lake View came back out after the half ready to play. On the first play of the second half, #4 Tyshaun McDaniel took the hand-off and carried the ball for a touchdown. Lake View took the lead, 20-19. Bridgett took the hand-off for the two-point conversion giving Lake View a 22-19 lead.
Latta’s first drive of the second half was unsuccessful, and Lake View got the ball back. #4 Lake View’s Tyshaun McDaniel took the handoff and carried the ball for 18 yards. #8 Delvon Bethea and #10 Duane Nichols both had carries. McDaniel carried the ball next and fumbled. #24 Nick Collins punted to Latta.
#7 Colby Lee passed long for the first down to Lake View’s 22-yard line. He then followed this with a carry to the one-yard line. #23 Kartilus McFadden carried the ball in for six points allowing Latta to take the lead 25-22 with 4:36 left in the third quarter. #2 Tyreik McAllister took the ball in for two points. Latta led 27-22.
#4 Tyshaun McDaniel picked up 25 yard on a carry to the Latta 30 yard line. He carried for another three yards and then was dropped for a loss. #10 Duane Nichols passed to #8 Delvon Bethea for a touchdown, a 31-yard play. Lake View took back the lead 28-27. Nichols got the two-point conversion improving the lead to 30-17 with 2:36 left in the third quarter.
Latta tried to answer, but the time in the third quarter expired. #23 Kartilus McFadden opened the fourth quarter scoring from the three yard line. Latta led 33-30. #7 Colby Lee converted on the two-point conversion bringing the score to 35-30.
Lake View’s next drive was unsuccessful, and they had to punt with 10:13 remaining in the game.
#23 Kartilus McFadden carried the ball and lost a yard. #7 Colby Lee scrambled and completed a pass to McAllister for a first down. There was a good fake on the next play. McFadden then carried the ball in for six points with 8:42 remaining. Lee was stopped on the two-point conversion, and Latta led 41-30.
Latta tried a short kick, but Lake View gets the ball and starts from their own 45 yard line. #21 Randall Washington carried the ball, but there was a flag on the play against Lake View. #10 Duane Nichols completed a pass to #4 Tyshaun McDaniel. #8 Delvon Bethea carries the ball for almost 10 yards and picks up the first down. Bethea carries the ball to the four-yard line. Nichols scores bringing the score to Latta-41, Lake View-36. Bethea carries the ball in for a successful two-point conversion bringing the score to Latta-41, Lake View-38.
Lake View recovers an offside kick on Latta’s 40-yard line. On fourth down and 14 with 3:21 remaining and the ball on the 44, there is a flag on the play – offsides against Latta. On fourth and nine, #10 Duane Nichols scrambles and tosses one to Darius Ford for a first down on the 30-yard line.
#8 Delvon Bethea carried for five yards to the 25-yard line. #10 Duane Nichols scores from the 25-yard line. Lake View takes the lead 44-41 with 2:16 remaining in the game. Bethea gets the two-point conversion stretching the lead to 46-41.
Latta takes the ball back. Latta starts driving down the field, and it looks as if they will answer Lake View’s touchdown with one of their own, but #7 Colby Lee is picked off by #21 Randall Washington who scores six points with 1:05 remaining but there is a flag on the play.  Lake View is awarded the touchdown bringing Lake View’s lead to 52-41.  #8 Delvon Bethea picks up the two-point conversion bringing the final score to 54-41.
“The game was a great, hard-fought match. The talent on the field represented both communities well. Latta and Lake View have much to be proud of. I was especially proud of the band members joining forces to play the Star Spangled Banner in honor of our state’s flood victims. That is real community spirit!,” said Latta High School principal Leigh Sloan.
“I thought our boys did a great job,” said Latta Coach Brandon Iseman. “They prepared very hard during the week leading up. It just didn’t bounce our way during crunch time.  I’m very proud of their effort and how hard they fought.”
Edison Arnette, Lake View High School principal, said he was proud of both teams who played really hard and with great determination. “It was a war between the teams,” Arnette said. He said it was a game where both teams showed a lot of effort and had some hard hits.
“We got fortunate at the end of the game to earn a victory against Latta.  Latta’s a good team.  The entire Latta team made good plays all night.  I am proud of the effort of our teams,” said Coach Daryl King.
