Virginia McLaurin

Virginia McKiever McLaurin died on April 24, 2015, at McLeod Regional Hospital in Florence, SC. Born on December 5, 1920, in Sumter, SC, she was the daughter of Lucile Baker McKiever and Daniel Joseph McKiever.

Educated in the City schools, she graduated as class valedictorian from Sumter Girls’ High School in 1937. In addition to receiving numerous scholastic awards, the faculty selected her “Most Womanly,” and classmates presented her the “Citizenship” award. She was graduated summa cum laude from Furman University in 1941 with a B.A. degree. Upon graduation she was employed for three years by the Woman’s College of Furman as assistant to the registrar.

In 1944 she was married to Jack H. McLaurin, Jr. and resided her entire married life in Dillon, SC, where she was active in both social and civic affairs. She was one of the organizers of the Junior Charity League and provided leadership in both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts’ programs. For several years she taught in elementary grades. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, traveling, and participating in several social clubs.

Mrs. McLaurin was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church and was active in all phases of teaching and Women’s work. She taught the Ladies’ Sunday School class for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jack H. McLaurin, Jr.; her older son, John Hugh McLaurin III and his wife, Susan Warren McLaurin; her sister, Mary McKiever Hunter; and her sister, Lucile Baker McKiever. Mrs. McLaurin is survived by her son, David Duncan McLaurin, (Jeanne) of Dillon; her daughter, Virginia McLaurin Manning, (Cameron) of Hartsville, SC; her brother, Daniel Joseph McKiever, (Betty) of Birmingham, AL; her grandchildren: David Duncan McLaurin, Jr., John Daniel McLaurin, Virginia Manning Coulter (Billy), Frank Cameron Manning III (Sallie), Laurin Parham Manning, Alyson McLaurin McGirt (Kay), Lucile McLaurin Owens (Michael), John Hugh McLaurin IV; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on April 26, 2015, at 4:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Dillon with interment in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. John Bumgardner will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Church from 3:00 to 4:00 P.M.
