Latta Ladies Upset Bears 61-50 in Battle of Top-Ranked Class A Teams

In a clash of two of the top-ranked teams in the state, the third-ranked Latta Vikings defeated the second-ranked Carvers Bay Bears 61-50 on Tuesday night in girls varsity basketball action.

Latta took a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, but Carvers Bay outpaced the Vikings 20-17 in the second quarter to close the gap to 27-24. But Latta used a 22-16 third quarter to pull ahead 49-40, and sealed the win with a 12-10 fourth quarter.

TaKeria Legette led all scorers with 33 points in the win. Riana Green added 12 points for the Vikings and Mallory Townsend earned 11, with Maya Wright scoring three and Iyonna McKenzie adding two. Leggette had two three-point goals in the win.

Desaree Green led Carvers Bay with a team-high 14 points and Quantaisha Robinson added 12 in the effort. Zaria Blain scored 10; LaQuasha Coles, 8; Anatashia Bromell, 4; and Taleaa Adams, 2. Carvers Bay had 23 fouls in the game.

The Lady Vikings improve to 10-3 overall and take first place in Region 8-A with an undefeated 5-0 record. Carvers Bay slips to second place with a 4-1 record in the region.

Latta will be on the road at Creek Bridge this Friday and back at home next week to host Lake View on Tuesday and Green Sea Floyds on Friday. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
