Scotland Christian’s Lady Saints Down Dillon Christian Warriors 6-4

Eight very careless errors proved costly to the Lady Warriors as they went down 6-4 to the Lady Saints of Scotland Christian School Tuesday in Laurinburg in a game that was played in weather more suitable to football than softball.

Scotland Christian is a Christian-oriented school located just south of the city of Laurinburg. This is a growing school with a well-kept campus and friendly staff. The Saints fielded a team of 23 players and due to some religious beliefs some of the Lady Saints play in dresses in all girl sports.

Sisters Destiny and Kaitlen Cartrette covered shortstop and third base and played these two infield hot spots error free in dresses. Both teams got a runner to third base in the first inning but failed to bring her home.

In the second inning, the Warriors and Saints stranded runners at second and third but again closed with the score at 0-0 at the end of two.

In the top of the third inning, Sarah Fitzgibbon drove in Madison King who had doubled and stolen third base for the game’s first run. The Warrior lead did not last long as the petite Destiny Cartrette, dress and all, lead off with a hit to left field. Unfortunately it landed in the left field of the neighboring baseball field for a homerun to tie the game at 1-1.

The Warriors failed to get anything going in the top of the fourth and a series of errors lead to two runners on base with Cartrette back at bat, this time sending the ball over the center field fence for a three run homer and a 4-1 lead.

The Warriors got their second run in the top of the fifth with Fitzgibbon driving in Samantha Carpenter at third with a base hit. What should have been easy outs resulted in two additional runs for the Saints in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 6-2. The sixth inning was scoreless but the Warriors put together a rally in the top of the seventh, falling short after scoring two runs to end the game with the 6-4 loss to the Saints.

On the Mound for the Saints, Cecily Thompson posted six strikeouts, had six walked batters, and allowed seven hits and four runs scored for the win.

On the mound for the Warriors, back after several weeks absence due to illness, Jamie Carpenter posted six strikeouts with no walked batters and gave up four hits with six runs scored (four unearned) for the loss.

At bat for the saints, Destiny Cartrette was 2-for-4 with two homeruns and four RBI; Cecily Thompson was 2-for-4; and Kaitlen Cartrette, Kaitlen Cook, Daysha Quick, Emily Jorgenson, Kyliegh Collins, Carle Howard, and Emma Stogner made it to base on errors.

At bat for the Warriors, Madison King was 2-for-4, both doubles, with a fielder’s choice hit, a RBI, and a stolen base; Sarah Fitzgibbon was 2-for-4 with two fielder’s choice hits and two RBI; Samantha Carpenter was 1-for-2 with two walks and two stolen bases; Madison Moody was 1-for-2; Jamie Carpenter was 1-for-4 with a stolen base; Emilie Martin, Hannah Walters, and Ansley Hamer made it to base on walks; and Ravin Norris advanced runners on a fielder’s choice hit.

The Warriors are scheduled to play at home today against Trinity/Byrnes and will travel to Darlington County on Friday for a rematch with both games set for 5:00 p.m.
