Marie Glenn

Mrs. Marie W. Glenn died Sunday, February 3, 2013 after a stroke suffered January 4, 2013. She was the daughter of Mary C. Williamson and Duncan L. Williamson of Hamer. Mrs. Glenn was 96 and died at home where she was born on April 12, 1916. She was a graduate of Hamer School, Dillon High School, and Winthrop College. Post-college she studied to become a Medical Techologist at Spartanburg General Hospital. She began work as a laboratory technologist at Duke University Hospital. While there, her future father-in-law, Dr. L.N. Glenn, hired her away to staff the X-Ray Department at his hospital in Gastonia, NC. There she met and later married Robert R. Glenn. His death and the pending birth of her son prompted a return home to Hamer, SC.
Mrs. Glenn worked in Radiology until her retirement. Her work from 1960 until 1986 was at the Saint Eugene Community Hospital in Dillon where she retired as director of the department. She was active in the work of the SC Society of Radiologic Technologists as a founding member, officer, and life member.  A scholarship was named in her honor in 2009 by the Society.
She was an active member of Kentyre Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA). She was an Elder, a Moderator of the Women of the Church of Pee Dee Presbytery, and a Vice President of the Women of the Church of the Synod of SC. Her church work led her to many national and international conferences. Her efforts in women’s work for the church were her lifelong love. The many friendships resulting from that work were among her most cherished associations.
She was a three-time cancer survivor and living proof that early detection can lead to longevity. She believed listening was an important way to learn things, good coffee is very high on the list of life’s luxuries, and that the rocking chair on her porch under the wind chimes was the finest place on earth.
She is survived by her son Bob Glenn, her grandson Malcolm Glenn, her granddaughters, Greer and Grace Glenn, all of Mt Pleasant, SC as well as her niece Mary Addis of Atlanta, GA, her niece Mary Routh of Sarasota, FL, and her nephew John L. Glenn of Cullowhee, NC. Her friends and relatives of the Hamer community have been a wonderful support her entire life.
Funeral services are to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Kentyre Presbyterian Church, 2904 Kentyre Rd, Hamer, SC 29547. A celebration of her life will be held in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
