Lady Wildcats Edge Vikings 56-53, Dominate Lions 77-39 in Girls Hoops

Led by Tyshanna Lester, the Dillon Lady Wildcats added two more wins on the road this week in girls basketball action.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats traveled to Latta to take on the Vikings in their second non-region meeting of the season. Latta won the first meeting in December 59-45, but the addition of Lester helped boost the Lady Wildcats to a 56-53 win on Wednesday.

Latta took a 17-7 lead in the first quarter but the Wildcats responded 15-6 in the second to trail 23-22 at the half. Dillon took the lead in the third, outscoring Latta 19-14, and despite a close 15-16 fourth period, the Wildcats held on for the win.

Tyshanna Lester scored 21 points for the Wildcats and picked up 11 rebounds with four assists in the win. Lester transferred from Marion but was ineligible to play due to grades in the fall semester. Since her debut for Dillon on Tuesday, she has scored over 20 points in every game.

Khamele Manning added 17 points against Latta, and Yolanda Campbell scored six with 13 rebounds. Shymya Sowells added seven, Brianna Lee scored three, and Shar’Asia Samuel added two points in the win.

Tianna Deberry led the Lady Vikings with a team-high 16 points, including a three-pointer. TaKeria Legette added 15 points and also hit a three-pointer while going 2-for-3 on free throw attempts. Brittany Burgess added eight points and Maya Wright went 6-for-7 on free throws for six points. Jessica Evans added six points, and Kierra Johnson scored two.

Wright picked up nine rebounds for the Vikings, with Legette grabbing seven, and Burgess and Deberry snagging five each. Johnson picked up four rebounds and Evans had one. Deberry, Evans, and Burgess had two steals each and Legette made one. Burgess and Johnson each made one block, and Burgess led the team with six assists. Deberry made five assists, with Legette and Wright making two each and Evans assisting once.

On Thursday, January 17, Tyshanna Lester again led the charge for the Lady Wildcats as they traveled to take on the Loris Lions for a 77-39 win.

Dillon leapt out to an 11-9 lead in the first quarter before dominating the second 31-7 and the third 20-13. With a 62-29 lead heading into the fourth, Dillon again outscored Loris 15-10 to secure the 77-29 win.

Lester earned a game-high 25 points with 11 rebounds and 11 steals to lead Dillon in the victory. Brianna Lee added 12 points and Khamele Manning added 11 for the Wildcats, with Shar’Asia Samuel scoring nine, Yolanda Campbell adding seven points with 10 rebounds, and Bonnie Fields earning six points. Dakerhia Samuel scored four points with 13 rebounds and Nakedra Page earned two points in the win.

Jazmin Bellamy led Loris with a team-high 10 points, and Lareba Jackson added eight for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Wildcats improve to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in Region 8-2A.

Tonight, Dillon will be on the road again to face the Waccamaw Warriors, and on Friday, the Wildcats will be back home to host Aynor. Both games start at 6:00 p.m. Make plans to attend Friday to support our local teams!
