Latta – Bernice McIntyre Coleman, 88, died Friday, January 11, 2013, at the Methodist Manor in Florence, SC. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, January 14, 2013, at Kannaday Funeral Home in Latta, SC. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Latta United Methodist Church in Latta, SC, followed by burial in Magnolia Cemetery, Latta, SC.
She was the widow of John Dozier Coleman, Jr., and the daughter of the late DeWitte Talmadge and Bernice Bullock McIntyre of Clio, SC. Born in Marlboro County September 19, 1924, she graduated from Dillon High School and attended Furman University from 1941-1944; she later received a B.A. degree from Coker College and completed her M.A. in Reading from Appalachian State University. She enjoyed a long career in education, teaching at Latta Primary School followed by serving as Reading Coordinator for Marion School District #1. She was an active member and past president of the International Reading Association of the Pee Dee and past officer of Delta Kappa Gamma of Alpha Eta State (South Carolina).
Mrs. Coleman was a member of the Latta United Methodist Church for sixty-five years; she was a member of its Josephine Stackhouse Circle and the Ladies Bible Class. She was also a member and past regent of the Rebecca Pickens Chapter of the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Pee Dee Chapter of the S.C. Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century.
She was preceded in death by her brothers D. Hamer McIntyre and John Edwin McIntyre, both of Clio, SC, and her sister Mary Elizabeth McIntyre Rogers of Dillon. Mrs. Coleman is survived by her two sons; John Dozier (Lillian) Coleman III of Florence,SC, and DeWitt McIntyre Coleman of Latta,SC; granddaughters Monica (Hank) Gaddis of Columbia, SC, Keating (Patrick) Lowery of Memphis, TN, and L. Marshall (Clarke) Newton of Columbia, SC; and grandsons Dr. DeWitt “Ty” (Sasha) Coleman of Lexington, SC, and John Coleman of Florence, SC. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, a brother, Robert W. (Polly) McIntyre of Dillon, SC, and sister, Jean Coward of Lilburn, GA.
