Leonard Earns Defensive MVP Honors as South All Stars Shutout North 23-0

Lake View’s Darius Leonard earned Defensive MVP honors for the South in the 64th annual SCADA North-South All-Star game on Saturday at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, SC. The South shut out the North 23-0 in the game.

Lake View’s Leonard and Dillon’s Hishawn Blue were both chosen to play for the South in the game, along with Johnsonville’s Eric Hampton, Marlboro County’s Saquan Ivory, and Manning’s Rochar Witherspoon. Timmonsville’s Brandon Hampton, Hartsville’s Trey Gattison and Cory Wiedrich, and West Florence’s Ashton Julious and Michael Thomas also played for the South.

Both teams were scoreless Saturday until the third quarter, when Summerville’s Jerod Tucker ran in a 78-yard touchdown to give the South a 7-0 lead. Leonard and Blue combined for a safety, and Dorchester’s Daitwan Commodore scored on a 3-yard run to put the South up 16-0 in the third quarter.

Commodore scored again in the fourth on a 12-yard touchdown run, earning Offensive MVP honors for the South squad.

Myrtle Beach’s Max Huggins kicked in all three extra points for the South.

Leonard had nine tackles in the game to lead the defense for the South, and Blue made three tackles and one sack.

On offense, Commodore carried 12 times for 61 yards. Jerod Tucker carried three times for 75 yards; Anthony Smalls carried eight times for 52 yards; and Noah Shuler carried 11 times for 48 yards.

Frazier completed seven of 17 pass attempts for 72 yards and Smalls completed four of seven for 26 yards. DeVona Delaney caught three passes for 33 yards, Jordan Berry caught three for 20 yards, Marquis Webb caught 2 for 26, and Rudder Brown caught two for 12.

The North’s Offensive MVP was Tovarius Cureton and Defensive MVP was Simeon Byrd. Cureton made three catches for 58 yards while Byrd led the North’s defense with 11 tackles and a sack.
James Waring was the head coach for the South, and Dillon’s coach Robbie Brown, Hartsville’s coach Jeff Calabrese, and West Florence’s coach Trey Woodberry were among the assistant coaches.

The win was the South’s first shutout since 2006 and broke the South’s losing streak. The North leads the series 36-26-2.
