Latta Vikings Split with Marion Swamp Foxes in Season Openers

Latta’s Lady Vikings earned wins over Marion’s Lady Swamp Foxes while the Latta boys fell in both opening games of the basketball season.

Latta traveled to Marion on Tuesday, November 27, with the Lady Vikings earning a 75-44 win over the Swamp Foxes.

But the boys had more trouble with Marion as the Foxes outscored Latta 29-11 in the first period and 20-12 in the second for a 49-23 lead at the half. The Vikings were able to add 21 points in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Swamp Fox lead as Marion claimed the 87-55 win.

On Tuesday, December 4, Latta hosted Marion, and although Kenche Page earned a game-high 20 points, the Vikings fell 72-41. Marion jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first and outscored Latta in every period, adding 18 points in the second, 21 points in the third, and 14 in the fourth for the win.

Page’s 20 points led Latta, with Tyrell Sabb adding seven, Charles McGill earning two, and Travise Kinney, Brandon Wilson, and Quane’ Williams each adding four.

Kevin Rowell led Marion with 15 points, with Terry Wiggins and Michael Outlaw each earning 13. Laron Adams scored 10; T. Alford, 5; J. Tyler, 5; D. Foxworth, 4; P. Hampton, 4; and J. Godbold added three points.

In girls action, Latta jumped out to a 17-7 lead and both teams added 13 points in the second. The Lady Vikings outscored Marion 14-11 in the third and 28-15 in the fourth to secure a 72-46 win.

Latta’s Tianna DeBerry earned a game-high 27 points to lead the Lady Vikings, with Takeria Legette adding 17 points and Jessica Evans scoring 13 in the wi. Brittany Burgess added eight points, Maya Wright scored three, and Madelia Johnson and Mallory Townsend each earned two.

Shatoria Duncan led the Lady Swamp Foxes with 14 points. LaQuiesha Kinney earned nine; Courtney Davis, 8; Kyra D., 6; Shayrian J., 6; TKayhia C., 4; Sierra Lester, 2; and Jada Bennett, 1.

The Latta boys are now 0-2 while the girls are 2-0. Despite a rough start against the Class AA Foxes, the Vikings were ranked eighth in this week’s Class A poll of the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.

Latta will next host Mullins on Tuesday, December 11, with varsity action beginning at 6:00 p.m. Make plans to attend to support our local teams!
