Wild Gators Defeat Carvers Bay 8-3, Shut Out Hemingway 16-0

Lake View’s Wild Gators took down Carvers Bay 8-3 and Hemingway 16-0 in recent Region 8A baseball action.

The Gators traveled to Carvers Bay on Thursday, March 29, and brought home an 8-3 win over the Bears.

Chris Ford got to base on a single and was brought in by Eric Munoz to give Lake View a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Carvers Bay’s Lesane got to base on a walk, and made it to third on hits from Rabon and More, but was tagged out before he could make it home to end the inning.

In the second, Lake View’s Brody Smith and Steele Mendenhall each singled to make it to base and a walk from Roger Scott loaded the bases. A single from Chris Ford brought in both Smith and Mendenhall to put Lake View up 3-0. Three outs from Carvers Bay wrapped the inning quickly for the Bears.

Darius Leonard got a walk in the third, stole second, and crossed home on a single from Brody Smith. The Bears got on the board in the third when Owens got to base on a walk, advanced to third on a single from Grier, and was brought in by a sacrifice fly from Legette to make the score 4-1. The Bears managed to hold Lake View off in the fourth inning and stage a bit of a comeback as they added two runs. More and Lewis each got to base on walks, and a single from Ferguson brought in More. A walk from Grier moved Lewis to third, and he crossed home on a wild pitch. Ferguson was poised to tie the game, but a fly from Legette ended with an out to end the winning with the score 4-3.

The Gators answered with two more runs in the fifth as Hunter Walters doubled on his way to one run, and John Michael Brown singled and came in on a walk from Leonard. The Bears started the fifth with Lesane hit by the pitch to make it to first. He made it to base on a sacrifice bunt and made it to third on a fielder’s choice, but Lewis struck out to end the inning before he could score.

Chris Ford added run number seven for the Gators in the sixth inning, and Lake View struck out two of the next three batters for the Bears to end the inning quickly. John Michael Brown got to base on a fielder’s choice in the seventh and was brought in by a double from Darius Leonard for the final score of 8-3.

Leonard picked up the win for the Gators, pitching four innings for just one hit, one run, one earned run, and two walks. He faced 15 batters and struck out five. Nate Lewis pitched three innings for Lake View, allowing three hits, two runs, two earned runs, and three walks, striking out three.

Lesane took the loss for Carvers Bay, pitching five innings for seven hits, six runs, three earned runs, and six walks, striking out five. More pitched two innings for the Bears for one hit, two runs, two earned runs, two walks, and two outs.

Chris Ford went 2-for-3 at bat for Lake View with two runs and two RBIs. Brody Smith went 2-for-3 with one run and and an RBI; Darius Leonard went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI; John Michael Browne went 1-for-4 with two runs scored; Steele Mendenhall and Hunter Walters each went 1-for-4 with one run scored; and Eric Munoz picked up one RBI on a sacrifice fly. Nate Lewis and Roger Scott had two walks each.

For Carvers Bay, More went 1-for-2 with one run scored; Grier and Rabon each went 1-for-3; Ferguson went 1-for-3 with an RBI; Legette earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly; and Lewis and Owens scored one run each.

On Tuesday, April 3, Lake View hosted the Hemingway Tigers for a 16-0 shut out victory.

After a scoreless opening inning, the Gators picked up nine runs in the second. Ford and Lewis each made it to base on walks and were scored by a double from Eric Munoz. Munoz and Hunter Walters each scored on passed balls on the catcher, and John Michael Brown doubled and was scored by Darius Leonard. Brody Smith got a walk and he and Leonard were both scored by a double from Steele Mendenhall. Leonard got to base again on a walk, stole second and scored on passed ball and an error to end the inning 9-0.

Hemingway’s Hayward doubled in the third and made it to base on an error, but the inning ended before he could make it home. But the Gators had no trouble rounding the bases as they added six more runs in the bottom of the inning. Munoz doubled to score two and crossed home himself on passed balls. Walters and Brown each got to base on walks, and Walters scored on passed balls while Hunter Stevens brought in Brown with a single. The Gators capped the win with a run from Brent Herlong in the fourth.

Leonard picked up the win, pitching three innings for five outs and one hit. Nate Lewis pitched two innings for five outs and one walk.

Hemingway’s Warren and Hayward each pitched two innings for the Tigers. Warren gave up three hits, nine runs, three earned runs, and six walks with two outs. Hayward allowed four hits, seven runs, one earned run, and five walks, striking out three.

Eric Munoz led the Gators at bat, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Steele Mendenhall went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs; Hunter Stevens went 1-for-2 with an RBI; Jamie Smith went 1-for-1 with an RBI; Chris Ford and John Michael Brown each went 1-for-2 with two runs scored; Nate Lewis, Darius Leonard, and Hunter Walters each scored two runs; and Brent Herlong, Roger Scott, and Brody Smith each scored one run. Lake View had seven hits and one error in the win.

Hayward got the only hit for Hemingway, going 1-for-2 with a double, and Eaddy got to base with a walk. The Tigers had six errors in the loss.

Lake View is currently 9-2 overall and 8-2 in Region 8A.

The Wild Gators will be in Dillon tonight for a double header with the Wildcats beginning at 5:00 p.m. Make plans to attend to support our local teams!

On Friday, April 13, Lake View will travel to Mullins for a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m., and on Monday, April 16, the Gators will be at Johnsonville at 5:30 p.m. for their next region game.
