Hamilton Having Successful Summer

Young local golfer Townsend Hamilton has been having a lot of success on the greens this summer, taking first place in the Florence Country Club Junior Invitational and tying for second in the Carolinas Amateur Qualifier at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning, SC.

The 58th Annual Florence Country Club Junior Boys Invitational was held June 9 and 10 at the Florence Country Club in Florence, SC. Hamilton participated in the 15- to 18-year-old division, leading the field with scores of 72 and 67 for a total of 139. The field was highly competitive, with Carson Young and Jonathan Hardee tying for second with a score of 140, Parker Mills in third at 141, Ben Miller with 142, and Adam Garret in sixth with a 143.

The Carolina Amateur Qualifier was held on June 21, with only the top 14 qualifying. Will Ovenden finished in first place with a score of 68, finishing four under par. Hamilton and five other golfers tied for second place with a total score of 69, each finishing three under par. Hamilton scored a birdie on holes 4, 11, 12, and 18, finishing all but hole 14 on or under par.

Allen Stephens of Dillon also participated, but did not make the cut with a score of 80, putting him eight over par.

In addition to those tournaments, Hamilton has had success as part of the South Carolina Junior Golfer’s Association. He tied for second at the Oakdale Country Club and took third at Governor’s Run early in June.

Then on Monday, June 27, he took first place in the tournament held at Twin Lakes Country Club, shooting a 70 to lead the Players division by one stroke. Hamilton is now in third place in the SCJGA Hootie and the Blowfish Pee Dee Chapter with 61 total points. Hamilton trails second place by only 10 points and will have his next chance to close the gap on Friday, July 8, when the SCJGA will be hosted by Crossings Golf Club in Florence.
