Lady Gators Cap Season with Wins Over South Robeson, Cheraw

Lake View’s Lady Gators capped off a winning regular season with two more victories this week: a 10-0 win over South Robeson, and a 14-0 win over Cheraw.

On Wednesday, April 21, the Lady Gators traveled to South Robeson to take on the Lady Mustangs. Lake View’s Avonlea Cooke earned her 20th victory of the season on the mound, and Kayla Sanderson had a home run as the Lady Gators came away with a 10-0 win.

Lake View scored four runs in the first inning to put them ahead, adding one in the third and five more in the fifth for the win. The Lady Gators had eight hits in the game, while South Robeson had only three hits, with four errors and no runs.

Avonlea Cooke was the winning pitcher for Lake View, pitching in all five innings for only three hits and one walk, striking out five. South Robeson’s Chelsea Jacobs was the losing pitcher, going four and one-third innings with five earned runs, eight hits, and two walks. She struck out two.

Lake View’s leading hitters included Chessie Miller, 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs; Kayla Sanderson, 1-for-1 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs; and Sierra Sports, 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs.

On Monday, the Lady Gators closed out the regular season with a 14-0 win over the Cheraw Braves. Chessie Miller and Kayla Sanderson each hit solo home runs in the win.

Lake View scored four runs in the first inning, nine in the second, and one in the third to claim the victory. The Lady Gators had 12 hits in the win, while Cheraw had three hits and three errors.

The winning pitcher was again Lake View’s Avonlea Cooke, who pitched three innings, allowing only two hits, one walk, and no runs. She struck out four.

Chiles Reddy took the loss for Cheraw. Reddy went four innings with 12 hits, 14 runs, eight earned runs, and two walks, striking out three.

Chessie Miller led the Lady Gators at bat, going 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Kayla Sanderson was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs; Morgan Wethington went 3-for-4 with three RBIs; Brittany Floyd was 2-for-2 with two RBIs; and Amber Locklear was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Lake View finishes the regular season with an overall record of 21-2. As previously reported, Lake View finished closed out region play with an undefeated 10-0 record in Region 8-A to claim the region title.

The Lady Gators were scheduled to enter the first round of Class A playoffs tonight against Scott’s Branch, the fourth place team in Region 7-A. However, Scott’s Branch forfeited the game on Wednesday morning.

Lake View now moves on to the District VIII winners bracket and where they will host the winner of tonight’s game between Branchville and St. John’s. Game time is scheduled for noon this Saturday, April 30.
