Latta Girls Defeat Lamar, Split Double Header with South Florence Bruins

Latta’s Lady Vikings added two wins and a loss to their season record this week as they defeated Lamar 17-0 and split a double header against the South Florence Bruins, taking game one 4-1 and losing game two 6-0.

In the Wednesday, March 16, matchup against Lamar’s Silver Foxes, Kaitlin Lewis was the winning pitcher. She pitched in all five innings, allowing only one hit and one walk and striking out five Silver Foxes.

Lewis was also one of Latta’s leading hitters, along with Raven Baxley. Both girls went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, with Baxley earning a triple and Lewis hitting a home run. Baxley made three runs and Lewis made two.

Latta’s other batters included Dallas Sweat, 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run; Paige Lovett, 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run; Anna Rogers, 1-for-2 with one run and an RBI; Andrea Gilbert, 1-for-1 with an RBI; Dori Webster, 1-for-1 with an RBI; Allison Moody, 1-for-2 with two runs; Charise Braddy, 1-for-2 with two runs; Anna Benton Love, 1-for-4 with one run; Chelsea Welty, 1-for-3 with one run; Morgan Mason, 1-for-1; Brittany Burrell, one run; Sarah Lane, 1-for-1 with one run; and Taylor Cox, 1-for-1 with one run.

On Saturday, March 19, the Lady Vikings traveled to Florence to split a double header with the South Florence Lady Bruins.

In game one, South Florence scored in the first inning, but three runs in the third from Latta gave them the lead. They earned one more in the fifth for a 4-1 win.

Anna Rogers was the winning pitcher for Latta, pitching five innings for the Vikings, allowing only three hits and one run and hitting two batters. The losing pitcher for South Florence was Nicole Rogers, who pitched five innings and gave up nine hits, four earned runs, and a walk, striking out only one.

Raven Baxley led the Vikings at bat, going 3-for-3 with one run, while Dallas Sweat went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Chelsea Welty also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Also batting were Charise Braddy, 1-for-3 with one run, and Kaitlin Lewis, 1-for-3.

For South Florence, the leading hitters were Jessie Sims, 1-for-3, and Nicole Rogers, 1-for-3.

Game two saw the Lady Bruins turn things around, going 6-0 over the Lady Vikings. The Bruins earned two points in the inning before driving in four runs in the third for the win.

Nicole Rogers was the winning pitcher in game two, pitching five innings and getting two strike outs for the Bruins. Morgan Mason was the losing pitcher for Latta, pitching in four innings and giving up six runs, five earned runs, and four walks.

South Florence was led at bat by Tayler Young, 2-for-3 with two runs; Brianna Kelly, 2-for-2 with one run and four RBIs; and Abby Lynch, 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Latta’s hitters were Allison Moody, 1-for-2; Raven Baxley, 1-for-2; Chelsea Welty, 1-for-2; Kaitlin Lewis, 1-for-2; and Morgan Mason, 1-for-2.

The Vikings regular season record now stands at 6-1 with a 2-0 region record. Their overall record, including the pre-season, is now 9-6-1.

The Lady Vikings are scheduled to travel to Hemingway for a double header tonight at 5:00 p.m. On Friday, March 25, Latta is scheduled to host region foes and county rivals Lake View at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Wild Gators are 10-1 overall with an undefeated 5-0 record in Region 8-A.
