The Sights, Smells, And Sounds Of Spring

With the recent arrival of spring, with all of its new life springing up all around us in both the animal and plant domains, there are sights, sounds, and smells that come with the season that are more prominent now than at any other time of the year.
Winter had its unique things that stimulated our senses, as did summer and of course autumn, when it fully arrives with its multicolored foliage and tapestry that only the Divine Artist could coordinate and create. However, in my finite opinion, He truly demonstrates His omniscient and creative genius in the many sights, smells, and sounds of spring.
There are times in our lives when it is absolutely necessary to withdraw our attention and emphasis away from the mundane routine and problematic issues of life and pursue and enjoy the wonders of God’s creation.
With that having been set forth, we shall consider a few of the things that our Creator, Jesus Christ, has freely given us to enjoy in nature through our senses of sight, sound, and smell.

Sights of Spring
One of the most delightful sights of spring is, without question, the budding and blooming of the flowers, bushes, and trees.
There is nothing on earth that can compare or compete with the beauty and splendor of spring and its many colors expressed through the budding and blooming of its plants during this time of new beginning.
Little wonder that some of our most renowned writers and poets, like Walt Whitman and Robert Frost, often made allusions and direct inclusion of some of nature’s most astounding sights in their poems.
Another great sight of spring is the emergence of bumble bees, butterflies, and other winged insects buzzing and fluttering in the air.
If you are a nature watcher and one who occasionally takes a nature walk through a forest or wooded area, you may be fortunate enough to see new life in the form of a fawn, baby rabbit, or some other newly born animal of the wild.
During my early morning rides with my dog and pal, Nip, riding shotgun during the early spring,
I enjoy watching the fields of new growth of corn, wheat, soybeans, and other crops that have emerged out of the ground as we cruise down the country roads of Dillon County.
Perhaps one of the most common and anticipated sights of spring that most can identify with is one that takes place in their own yards.
The sight of fresh, green blades of grass carpeting our yards is a welcomed replacement to the brown and dead blades of fall and winter past.

The Smells of Spring
One of the smells of spring that is a pleasant odor to our noses is the fragrance that comes from the many flowers in bloom.
Few things depict that spring has fully arrived like the fragrant smell of its flowers.
Then there is the fragrant smell of the blossoming of trees like cherry blossoms and others that help to make up a bouquet of aromas.
The smell of grass, especially cut grass, adds to the smell of spring.

The Sounds of Spring
There are many sounds that signal the arrival of spring, like the croaking of frogs in a nearby pond and the chirping noise of sparrows and crickets outside the house. The sound of the wind as it breezes through the trees is a customary sound of spring.
Perhaps one of my most enjoyable sounds of spring is that of the reputed April showers that supposedly bring May flowers.
I so enjoy the sound of rain falling upon my roof and windowpane so much so that I went and bought a sheet of tin to position by my window, close enough for me to hear the sound of rain as it fell from my roof upon it. Few sounds are as soothing, serenading, and sleep inducing as the sound of rain falling upon tin.
There are of course many more sights, smells, and sounds of spring that are notable enough to consider in my column today. Nevertheless, we listed enough to get you started in enjoying these natural things that God has freely given to us to enjoy. They will stimulate your senses if you will take out time to notice them. For each of these natural wonders are gifts from our Creator and an expression of how much He loves us.
The following poem is one that I wrote to conclude and compliment everything I previously said:

Oh, The Wonder
of It All
Oh, the Wonder of it All
The beauty of creation
The tapestry reveals in nature
A work of divine
demonstration

To behold a fluttering
butterfly
And majestic eagle in flight
Is much more than ordinary
It is truly an amazing sight.

To smell the budding flowers
Emitting their perfume
Is certainly a great delight
That my nostrils readily
consume

Assuredly I am awestruck
At the roaring of thunder
And the flashing of
lightening
Oh, what an awesome
wonder

These things often humble me
And brings me to my knees
To worship He who made them all
The One I seek to please
