Local Athletes Compete in State Track Meets

Several Latta athletes recently competed in the Class A/AA State Championship track meet on Saturday, May 16, at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC.

Latta’s Iyonna McKenzie competed in the Girls 100 Meter Dash and finished in fifth place with a time of 13.00. She also competed in the Girls 200 Meter Dash, finishing third with a time of 26.51.

In the Girls 4×400 Meter Relay, Latta finished sixth with a time of 4:37.45. The relay included Adriane Scott, De’Kasia Green, Alexia McLeod, Jeanna Bethea, and Katie Williams.

The Latta girls finished 12th overall in the state with a total of 13 points. Southside Christian took the Class A state title with 112 points, and Battery Creek took the Class AA title with 96 points.

In the boys state meet, McBee took the Class A state title with 62 points and Pendleton claimed the Class AA state title with 48 points.

Several more local athletes from Latta and Dillon competed in the Class A state qualifiers on Saturday, May 9, with Latta finishing ninth overall with 24 points in the women’s rankings.

Latta’s McKenzie finished third overall in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 12.64 and first place in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 25.58. Margaret Desser also competed, finishing sixth overall in the 1,600 Meter Run with a time of 7:35.95. Latta’s Jeanna Bethea competed in the Long Jump event, finishing 13th overall with a distance of 13-02.00.

Latta also finished third in the 4×400 Meter Relay with a time of 4:37.45 and fifth in the 4×800 Meter Relay with a time of 13:16.99.

In the men’s meet, Latta’s Tyreik McAllister finished ninth in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.39, and Samuel Jackson participated in the Discus for 11th place with a distance of 93-01.00. Latta’s Jalen Gomillion finished 15th in the Shot Put at 35-00.00 and Jackson finished 16th with a distance of 34-11.00.

Latta finished 13th in the 4×800 Meter Relay with a time of 11:36.00.

In Class 2A, the Dillon girls finished 14th overall and the Dillon boys finished 15th.

In the girls meet, Dillon’s Jkya Bell finished fifth overall in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:04.41 and Jelissa Fentzlaff finished eight in the Shot Put with a distance of 27-08.00. The Lady Wildcats finished 10th in the 4×100 Meter Relay with a time of 53.30 and sixth in the 4×400 Meter Relay with time of 4:27.05.

In the boys meet, Dillon’s George Thompson finished 11th in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 18.59 and 14th in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:20.08. Dillon’s Murishi Isankunda finished eight in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:04.85, and Ka’nore McKinnon finished eighth in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 53.25 while Stacy Davis finished 12th with a 56.76. Joshua Cousar competed in the Shot Put and finished 14th with a distance of 37-03.00.

The Wildcats finished fifth overall in the 4×100 Meter Relay with a time of 44.44 and seventh in the 4×400 Meter Relay with a time of 3:46.75.
