Dillon County Shooters Place at 4-H State Skeet Championship

Shooters from Dillon County won several awards at the State 4-H Skeet Championship held at Mid-Carolina Gun Club in Orangeburg, SC on Saturday, May 23.

Dillon County 4-H had 24 shooters attending and two other Dillon County youth were shooting with the Mid Carolina 4-H team. Awards were given from 4-H in the State Skeet Championship and then other awards were given for shooters competing in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP).

Tangie McFee, shooting with a Mid Carolina 4-H squad, won the Ladies Sr. HOA as well as SCTP Ladies HOA. Her squad also came in third place in both Ladies divisions of 4-H and SCTP.

Tangie McFee of Dillon County, shooting on the Mid Carolina team, was the 4-H High Over All (HOA) Ladies Senior Varsity Division winner and the Ladies Jr. Varsity HOA in the SCTP Ladies division. Tangie shot 91 out of 100 targets. Her squad came in 3rd place in the 4-H Ladies Sr. Varsity division and 3rd place in the SCTP Ladies Varsity Division. Tangie also scored her first perfect round of 25 straight skeet targets and to commemorate her achievement her team members shot her hat in a ceremony. Tangie’s shooting earned her the qualification to compete in the SCTP national competition which will be held in Sparta, Illinois, in the summer of 2015.

Tangie’s brother, Rich, also shooting with the Mid Carolina 4-H team, was on a squad that placed second in the 4-H Jr. Advanced division and took second place in the SCTP Intermediate Advanced Division.

The Dillon County 4-H had two squads that placed in the competition. Shooting on the Jr. Varsity First Year squad were, Mason Powers, Connor Collins, and Jackson Elrod. They came in second place in that division with a score of 203 right behind the Clemson 4-H team who scored 204. In the JV First year division, Connor came in fifth Overall, Jackson came in sixth, and Mason came in eighth.

The Dillon County Sr. Varsity squad of Walker Brumble, Cole Anders, and Myers Hamer tied with the team from Mid Carolina for 2nd place with both squads shooting scores of 269. The Dillon squad was awarded third place after losing in the shoot off 5 to 3.

The Sr-Advanced squad of Walker Brumble, Myers Hamer, and Cole Anders tied for second place with Mid Carolina 4-H and ended in third place after losing in the tie breaker by a score of 5 to 3.

Other members of the Dillon County team shot very well. In the Jr. Varsity advanced division, Daniel Camp came in fifth overall, and Justin Herring, Zack Arrington, and Rich McFee all tied for ninth.

In the Sr. First year division, Samuel Coleman came in sixth place overall.
In the Sr. Varsity Advanced Division, Jim Carr came in fifth, scoring 92 out of 100 targets; Walker Brumble came in sixth, breaking 91 out of 100 targets; and Cole Anders came in seventh, shooting 90 out of 100.

At this competition it was announced that Myers Hamer, Hannah Martin, and Owen Hutchinson, all from the Dillon County 4-H team, will be representing South Carolina at the National 4-H Invitational competition at Grand Island, Nebraska the last week of June. They will be competing as a team in Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays against teams from all other 50 states. Jim Carr, also of the Dillon County team, was also elected to this team but is unable to attend so another 4-H shooter from Saluda County will complete the team.

The Dillon County 4-H will compete again on Saturday, June 13, in the 4-H State Sporting Clay Championship at the Palmetto Shooting Complex in Edgefield, SC.
