Alpha Lambda Members Strive To Be ‘Marigolds’ For New Teachers

The Alpha Lambda (Dillon County) Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met recently at The Charcoal Grill.
Members enjoyed breakfast and fellowship prior to the business meeting.
Alpha Lambda Chapter Member and Dillon School District Three Teacher of the Year Jodie Branham led the program portion of the meeting.
The program was based on an article entitled “Find Your Marigold:  The One Essential Rule for New Teachers” by Jennifer Gonzalez, which was published in Cult of Pedagogy online.
The premise of the article is that new (first-year) teachers should seek out veteran teachers who are like marigolds.  In the gardening world marigolds are known as valuable companion plants, which enable plants around them to grow and thrive.   Marigold teachers likewise are teachers who are positive, helpful, and encouraging to new teachers.
In the article new teachers are warned to steer clear of veteran teachers who are like walnut trees, which contain a toxic substance that causes surrounding plants to wither and die.
Walnut tree teachers are those who are negative, unhelpful, and discouraging.
The program concluded with members planting marigolds in small flower pots to be delivered to the first-year teachers in Dillon School Districts Three and Four and Dillon Christian School.
Alpha Lambda members will strive to be marigolds to the new teachers in the community. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honor society of key women educators.
Alpha Lambda Chapter was chartered in 1978 and includes members from Dillon, Latta, and Lake View.
