Local Artist Donates Piece To Library

By Betsy Finklea
A local artist has donated a piece of her artwork to the Dillon County Library.

It all started with an art show that the library hosted in October. Doris Wilkes Lamb of the Minturn Community was a part of the show. Interim Library Director Christina Fowler really liked Lamb’s work and approached her about creating a piece for the library.
Fowler said the work she liked best was Lamb’s chicken art, and she asked Lamb to create something to hang in the foyer. Lamb developed the idea of a chicken reading a book as shown in the photo.
Lamb was born in the Minturn area of Dillon County and spent many of her summer days working on her family’s farm. She is a veteran having joined the Air Force after high school. She served a tour in Okinawa, Japan, and eventually retired from the S.C. Air National Guard. She was stationed in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm.
A graduate of Coker University, Lamb is a self-taught artist and credits God with her ability to paint. Wilkes went through some difficult times as an estranged grandmother and said she prayed for God to help her through it. That answer came through painting and the rest is history.
Fowler is very pleased that Lamb has shared her talent with the library and the community. Stop by the Dillon Library to see the piece in person.
