Last month, local 4-Her Sophie Haselden represented our county at SC 4-H Congress held on Clemson’s campus. This was Sophie’s second year attending this premier SC 4-H event. For four fun-filled days, SC youth are emersed in leadership opportunities, community outreach, and personal development.
Senior 4-H members (ages 14-18) experience college life by staying in the dorms and eating in the college dining halls. University personnel and resources are utilized to provide quality hands-on workshops that expand knowledge and leadership skills in the youth. An important part of this event is celebrating and recognizing teens who “make the best better” at the South Carolina 4-H Achievement Banquet held on the last night of Congress.
While at Congress, Sophie enjoyed listening to speakers from various backgrounds while making friends with fellow 4-Hers across South Carolina. Congress is also where state teen council members are chosen.
The purpose of the State Teen Council is to enhance and utilize the leadership, citizenship, and communication skills of 4-H teens. Members also serve as positive role models for younger 4-H youth.
For the second year in a row, Sophie was selected to serve as the Pee Dee Representative on the state teen council.
She will represent 4-H’ers from our region and plan state events and other initiatives.
