Lake View defeated Lower Florence 8-6 for the District Championship played in Timmonsville on Thursday, June 24, before a large crowd of spectators.
Lake View was retired in the top of the first inning in 1-2-3 fashion by Lower Florence.
Lower Florence’s Parker arrived safely at first after beating the throw from short. Matthews went down swinging for out 1. B. Parker garnered a walk. Lower Florence’s #00 hit one to right and 2 scored to give Lower Florence an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bryant hit one to short center for a single and a rbi to give Lower Florence a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Lake View’s Hashbrown hit one to third and arrived safely on an overthrown throw to first. Lake View’s #21 garnered a walk, and Hashbrown moved to third. Lake View’s #21 moved to second on a passed ball. Lake View’s #3 hit one to left for a single and a rbi. Runners were now on the corners. Lake View’s #9 hit a grounder to third and arrived safely at first with the runner out at second and a run scored to cut the lead to only 1 run, 3-2.
Lower Florence’s Marlow, Beard, and Bish were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the second inning.
Lake View’s #8 hit a long one to left and safely returned to second after being caught between second and third attempting a triple. Lake View’s #10 hit a sac grounder to second to move the base runner to third. Lake View’s #2 hit one up the middle for a single and a rbi to knot the score at 3. Lake View’s #1 hit one to center for a single and a rbi to give Lake View the first lead of the game, 4-3. Lake View’s #13 hit a hard one by short for a double and a rbi to give Lake View a 2-run cushion, 5-3. Lake View’s #21 hit a fly to short left for a double and a rbi to give Lake View a 6-3 lead after 2 and one-half innings of play.
Lower Florence quickly responded with hit to left for a single for #16. Florence’s #5 hit a chopper to short, and both runners arrived safely. Florence’s #00 hit a grounder to second and was out at first with a rbi to cut the lead to 2 runs, 6-4. Florence’s #24 hit one to left and made it to second and a run scored to cut the lead to 1 run, 6-5 after 3 innings of play.
Neither team could muster a score in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Lake View’s #1 garnered a walk followed by #13’s hot grounder to second that was too hot to handle to give Lake View runners on first and second. Lake View’s #21 hit a grounder to first for out 1 but the runners advanced to second and third. Lake View’s #6 also picked up a walk to load the bases. Lake View’s #3 was hit by a pitch that allowed a run to score. Lake View was now up 7-5 after 4 and one-half innings.
Lower Florence was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Lake View’s #24 dropped one in over second for a single and moved to second on a passed ball. #1 garnered a walk that placed runners on first and second. Lake View’s #13 hit one to center for a double and a rbi to give Lake View a 2-run lead, 8-6, after 5 and one-half innings.
Lower Florence could not muster a score in the bottom of the sixth.
