The Dillon Wildcats drove 70 yards on the opening drive of the 2-quarter scrimmage that resulted in a 2-yard burst up the middle by Johnny Allen for an early 6-0 lead over Lamar. Drew Covington added the extra point and a minute later kicked a 21-yard field goal to put the Cats up, 17-0. The three pointer was set up by a fumble recovery at the Lamar 20 that Shamar McCollum returned to the Silver Fox 7-yard line.
In the opening drive, Allen, who is returning this season after a neck injury sidelined him for most of the 2015 season, carried nine times for 44 yards and the score.
In the second quarter, after throwing an interception at the Lamar 23, Zareon Hayes connected with Ty’Quan Porter for a 26-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 17-0 after Covington’s second extra point of the night.
With reserves in the game on defense, Lamar intercepted twice and scored two touchdowns to get as close as 3 points with the Cats winning 17-14.
The Wildcats will take on highly talented Mallard Creek High School of Charlotte this coming Friday in Week Zero action!
