Mary E. (Libby) Baxley Pickerel

Services for Mary E. (Libby) Baxley Pickerel will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday at Main Street United Methodist Church with burial in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 2:00-3:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Pickerel, 93, died Monday, August 1, 2016 at the Methodist Manor in Florence.
Born in Dillon County, SC, July 3, 1923, she was the daughter of the late William M. Baxley and Lizzie Richardson Baxley. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she participated in the Methodist Women’s Wightman/Cottingham Circle, was a long time volunteer of McLeod Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Dillon Garden Club, and was a Patron of the Dillon County Theater. She was a graduate of Latta High School. She was married to the late Henry S. (Pic) Pickerel in October 1948. Mrs. Pickerel was a secretary at the Pentagon where she met her husband in the 1940’s. They spent the next 20+ years stationed at Ft. Myer. She became a school secretary for the Arlington County School System, first at Ft. Myer Elementary School and then Tuchahoe Elementary School. She was named Secretary of the Year by Arlington County Schools in 1988. Mrs. Pickerel retired in 1990 after serving the county for 36 years. She and her husband moved to Dillon for their retirement years in 1991.
Survivors include her two sons, Glenn S. and his wife Jennifer of Fredericksburg, VA, and Craig L. and his wife Sarah of Dearing, GA; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.
