Dillon County 4-H Shooters Take Top Honors

The Dillon County 4-H shooting team won 1st place in the senior division of the 4-H State Championship Skeet shoot which was held on Sunday of the Memorial Day Weekend.
The winning three man squad consisted of Myers Hamer, Cole Anders, and Walker Brumble.
4-H held a State Championship for three different shooting venues over the Memorial Day weekend 0f May 28 -30. The event began with a Sporting Clay competition on Saturday followed by Skeet on Sunday and finishing with Trap on Monday. Dillon County 4-H had squads shooting in every event but only placed in the Skeet Event and that by claiming 1st place. The three man score was 135 targets out of a possible 150. The event was reduced to a 50 target per man event due to the weather limiting the time available to shoot. Even with weather delays, the squad still had to shoot a portion of their targets in the rain.
Walker Brumble led the squad only missing three targets and breaking 47 out of 50. His score was the second highest of the day following Patrick Mills of Newberry who broke 48 out of 50. Walker’s team members, Myers Hamer broke 45 out of 50 and Cole Anders broke 43 out of 50. Their team score of 135 was one better than the Rocky Knoll team which had 134 to come in 2nd place.
On Saturday, the team had two squads competing in sporting clays. The senior squad had team members, Walker Brumble, Myers Hamer and Mason Powers. This squad came in 8th place in the Sr. Advanced division. Walker broke 92 targets out of 100, Myers broke 82 and Mason broke 83. Mid-Carolina was the winner of this event. Rich McFee, also from Dillon County, but shooting with Mid-Carolina 4-H came in 3rd Place in the Jr. Advance division and helped his team win 1st place in Sporting Clays.
Dillon County also had a Jr. Advance squad shooting sporting clays on Saturday. This squad came in 6th place in sporting clays. Shooter Jacob Edwards led the squad breaking 79 targets out of 100. Cole Gasque and Gately Bethea both broke 74 targets each. Strom Thurmond was the winner in this division.
On Sunday the Dillon County Sr. Squad won first place in the Sr. division in skeet. The Jr. Advanced squad came in 7th place with Mid- Carolina taking 1st place. The Dillon County shooters broke a total of 95 targets out of 150. Cole Gasque led the squad with 36, followed by Gately Bethea with 33 and Jacob Edwards with 26. Rich McFee, of Dillon County was shooting for the Mid-Carolina team and broke 41 out of 50 to help his team place 1st.
In the trap event on Monday the Dillon County Sr. Squad came in 4th place. The winning squad was Newberry. Walker Brumble scored 86, Cole Anders scored 77 and Mason Powers scored 71.
Rich McFee, also from Dillon County, was on the Jr. Advance Mid-Carolina team and they came in 1st in trap with Rich shooting 68,
In local shooting competitions, Rich McFee brought his performance to a new level. The Dillon County Rifle and Gun Club held its annual “Emory Edwards Memorial Match” which  is a 100 bird skeet match consisting of 4 rounds of 25 targets. In this match, shooters compete in different classes based on their past shooting performance. Rich, shooting in the “C” class started with a perfect 25 on his first round, He followed with another perfect round of 25 on his second round and then 24, only one miss on his 3rd round. He finished with a round of 21 which gave him a score of 95 out of 100. This event had 4 different classes for competing shooters and the winners were: Class AA – Bill Aston breaking 96 out of 100 and claiming the championship, Class A- Richard Calhoun breaking 79 out of 100, Class B – Denis Grubb breaking 86 out of 100, and Class C – Rich McFee breaking 95 out of 100
Rich McFee and his sister Tangie, also competed with Mid-Carolina 4-H in the 4-H sporting clay competition held at Rocky Knoll. Rich’s team came in 1st place and Tangie came in third place individually in the Ladies division. cRich McFee shooting for Mid-Carolina 4-H wins several awards at State 4-H championship.
