John Harvey Whittington, Sr. was born in South Carolina on Sunday, November 14, 1926 to the late Horace G. Whittington and Mamie Hurley Whittington and died Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 89 years old.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Whittington was preceded in death by eleven siblings. He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and choir member for many years. He was also a veteran of the US Army.
Mr. Whittington is survived by his wife Nancy Cook Whittington, five sons: John H. Whittington Jr. and his wife Rose Mary, and Doug Whittington and his wife Eleanor both of Rowland; Dean Whittington of White Fish, Montana, Maxwell H. Whittington and wife Michelle of Lumberton, and Andrew M. Whittington and his wife Charity of Wilmington; one daughter: Susan Pate and her husband Thomas of Bartow Fl.; one brother: Horace V. Whittington and his wife Molly; one sister: Sarah Ramey of Virginia; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 1:00 PM till 2:00 PM (one hour prior to the service) at Oakland United Methodist Church
Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM at Oakland United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Rowland Cemetery.
