Today marks a great event in the lives of these two young men, Morgan Covington and Jasean “J.T.” Carmichael, as they will move to the next level of football as both will go to Guilford College.
Morgan Covington and Jasean “J.T.” Carmichael have both been playing football since they were only 5 years old.
Carmichael, a wide receiver for the Dillon High Wildcats, also played basketball and enjoys weight lifting and listening to music.
Carmichael’s father, Roy Covington, Jr., played a big role in influencing his son in the sport of football.
Carmichael stated that Guilford played the same style of offense as Dillon High School so there will be little adjusting. His hard work and dedication to the sport will help carry him from the high school level to the college level.
Both Carmichael and Covington will major in sports management but Carmichael will also minor in psychology.
Carmichael’s late uncle, Gerald Washington, was not only his first football coach in rec league, but also the one who influenced him the most in football.
Carmichael believes he can fit into the football program at Guilford as he is willing to do whatever is needed of him. Carmichael has the will to win and plays wide open to the best of his ability all the time. He works hard at whatever he does.
Felecia Sowells, Carmichael’s mother, is very thankful that they managed to make it through all of their struggles this past year. “I’m so very proud of him. He managed to keep his head on straight and do what had to be done. I’m so proud of his accomplishments and look for him to continue to be successful”.
Shirley Covington, Morgan’s mother, is also very proud of her son. “Morgan has always been a humble child. I am very proud of him. He has been active in sports since he was 5 years old. He will be a great asset to the Guilford team, both academically and in the sport of football. Hats off to all of his accomplishments so far in life”.
Athletic Director and Dillon High School head football Coach Jackie Hayes only had great accolades about these young men.”You’ve both matured while playing football for Dillon High School. You’ve both had great training at home. You are both outstanding students. For the next four years you will be in charge of your life. You will not have a parent instructing you as to what to do. You will be in charge and responsible for your life. I’m very proud of both of you.”
“J.T., you’ve come a long way. You bought into what we were doing. You learned to do what was best for the team. When you get into the work force, it’s still a team effort. You’re very bright. You’re the most improved football player for Dillon High this year. Your attitude and your work ethic has greatly improved.”
Coach extended best wishes for these guys’ future endeavors. We really appreciated your help on our team.
Coach Hayes was emphatic when he stated “You can never get anywhere in life without help. Do not disappoint your mothers.”
