Yellow Jessamine Garden Club Meets

The Yellow Jessamine Garden Club of Dillon met on April 5, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Janet Keaton.  Thirteen members were present. President Mildred Mishue opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking Janet Keaton for being the hostess. Glenda Campbell then gave devotion on Judges 17:6; “In those days Israel had no King. Everyone did as they saw fit,” and how it relates to today’s society. Afterwards, Glenda gave the blessing for our refreshments. Janet provided homemade chicken salad tarts, fresh fruit, apple pie, homemade pound cake with strawberry topping and coffee or drink.
Secretary Judy Powell called roll by the naming of your favorite bird. She also read the minutes from the previous meeting; they were approved. Treasurer Cathy McDaniel read the Treasurer’s report; no additions were mentioned.  Membership Chairman, Earline Moody presented a new member to our club. Larue Bracey approved and Frances Tyler seconded. The candidate will now be sent a letter to join the Yellow Jessamine Garden Club.
Next, Projects and Litter Chairman, Frances Tyler, would like to set a date to clean the park when the weather is clear. Until our workday, trash and debris will be maintained.  Judy Powell, Ways and Means Chairman, brought to the club’s attention of continuing Holiday Goodness at the City of Dillon Wellness Center. We will discuss further in the meetings ahead.
Chaplain Helen Prevatte faithfully called all the members and reminded them of the meeting.
Publicity Chairman, Melissa Moody, handed out the newsletter and reminded all members to invite others to like our Facebook page. She noted the Coastal District Spring Meeting was in The Dillon Herald as well as pictures from the YJGC and on the Dillon Herald web page www.thedillonherald.com.  She would also like everyone to get involved for Earth Day on April 22.
New Business was noted by President Mildred Mishue. The Yellow Jessamine Garden Club won two corners at Harmon Park for the Harmon Park Beautification Project. The completion of this project is April 30. Special thank s to Maggie Riales at The City of Dillon Revitalization Department for the wonderful idea!
The April program was given by Dianne Pittman on birds. Several factors are very important to having a yard plentiful with birds. She also explained how important it is to make sure to keep it “bird happy.” She brought several displays of feeders and told how important it was to keep their feeders and watering areas clean. Some birds prefer to eat off the ground whereas other birds love to eat from feeders that are eye level. Please beware of placing food on the ground as this allows the birds to become prey to predators. Food is also significant in keeping a “bird happy” yard. Birds love sunflower seeds, thistle, fruit, and many other kinds of food.
The hummingbird loves red nectar from hummingbird feeders. ( It is time to get those feeders ready!) Bluebirds, Cardinals, Finches and many other birds are hypnotizing to watch as they play and perch on the feeders and in birdbaths. Birds are such beautiful creatures and we need to enjoy the little blessings in life!
After the wonderful presentation on birds, President Mildred Mishue presented the unfinished business and passed around a thank you card from Linda Siceloff, Coastal District Director. Mildred also asked that we visit Moore Farm & Botanical Gardens for our May meeting; we will leave at 8:30am on Saturday, May 7, 2016.
The door prize of a SC garden flag and watering can was won by Mildred Mishue. The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 8:30am as we go on a garden tour at Moore Farm & Botanical Garden.
The Yellow Jessamine Garden Club is a member of The National Garden Clubs, Inc., South Atlantic Region of National Council, The Garden Club of South Carolina Inc., and the Coastal District of The Garden Club of South Carolina.
