Some South Carolina households will be part of a random survey sponsored by the US Department of Transportation on travel trends, a key tool decision makers use to spend transportation dollars in the United States.
The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) helps to build a snapshot of how, when, and why people travel in their daily lives, whether they travel by car, public transit, bicycle or on foot. The USDOT has more than 40 years of trend data on the travel choices, preferences and needs of the public.
A random portion of South Carolina households may be contacted by mail and asked to participate in the survey. The survey begins data collection in April and continues for one year.

Information from the survey informs decision makers on where to spend transportation dollars to reduce congestion, improve safety and increase the availability of transportation in communities across the country.
“With your help, the US Department of Transportation can work to increase safety, reduce congestion, and improve the availability of transportation in your area. Information from the NHTS helps us make better decisions about future improvements in transportation nationwide,” according to the USDOT.
