The March meeting of the Magnolia Garden Club was hosted by Casey D. Pitts at Dale’s Garden Center. The ladies enjoyed a fun paper bag snack of rice krispy treats, goldfish, and shamrock iced sugar cookies. The bags were each adorned with whimsical St. Patrick’s Day themed stickers!  This was a “working” garden club meeting, and members were encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to help with the hands-on craft project.
The meeting was called to order, and the ladies were welcomed by Secretary Amanda Morrell. She introduced Mr. Dale Williamson, owner of Dale’s Garden Center. He was excited the ladies were utilizing his business for the meeting and garden project. Dale offers shrubs, trees, flowers, birdhouses, feed & seed, concrete statuary and other unique garden ornaments. The minutes from March were approved, and Treasurer Belva Greene gave a report on the state of the club’s finances. The ladies quickly discussed Springfest and the preparations to come including raffle items, work schedule and other details. The Saturday before this community event, the ladies were encouraged to participate in Town Clean-Up Day at the Belva Finklea Garden. The club wished a Happy Birthday to Bettie Carmichael on the 27th! Secretary Morrell turned the meeting over to program chairman Hepsy Parham.
Hepsy saw this inventive project in a Birds and Blooms magazine several years ago and has enjoyed hers so much that she wanted to share with the ladies. The idea is to create a bird bath that is surrounded by beautiful flowers throughout the growing season. To begin, the ladies each received a hanging basket with natural coco liner along with some potting soil. A small basin suitable for holding water was placed in the center of the basket and various greenery and flowers were planted around the shallow dish. Raney Coleman, granddaughter of member Dottie Brunson, and Luke Huggins, son of member Amanda Morrell, joined the club and helped the ladies fill the baskets with soil and plant a variety of beautiful flowers around the bird baths. Hostess Pitts also provided bubbles for the children to have fun with after the activity! Hepsy provided a creative program, and each member left the meeting with a beautiful new addition to their garden. Happy Spring Everyone!!!
