The Latta Vikings varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Hannah-Pamplico 73-22 in the first round of playoffs Monday, February 15, in Latta. The Vikings controlled the entire game from the opening tip-off until the sounding of the final buzzer.
The Vikings’ Rianna Green quickly scored the first 2 points of the game followed by TaKeria Legette who hit one for 2 points and another one for 3 points before Hannah-Pamplico hit a shot for 3 points. Latta’s Cierra Sullivan hit one for 2 while Arica Gandy also hit one for 2 points. Arica Gandy again connected for a 2-pointer before TaKeria Legette sank a long 3 with 2:35 left in the first quarter with Latta leading 16-3. On the next trip down the court, Legette laid in an easy 2. It appeared Latta could score at any time in the game, as it also appeared Hannah- Pamplico was reluctant to even attempt a shot. Rianna Green, Latta’s #10, hit one for 2 points. On the defensive end of the court, Arica
Gandy blocked an attempted shot from Hannah-Pamplico. On the next offensive play for Latta, TaKeria Legette was fouled and sank two free throws to add to her already good total for the evening. After the first quarter, Latta led 22-3.
Rianna Green for Latta hit on the first shot of the second quarter to add to Latta’s lead. Takeria Legette added a 3-pointer to give Latta a 27-3 lead. On Latta’s next offensive play Cierra Sullivan passed the ball to Moya McDuffie who was fouled. TaKeria Legette again connected on two foul shots before she again sank another basket for 2 points; she was again fouled. Rianna Green added a 3-pointer for the Vikings. Hannah-Pamplico’s #10 hit a 3-pointer to end the drought for the Raiders. Only a few moments later Koesha James for Latta sank one for 2 points. Hannah-Pamplico’s #23 was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws then hit a 3-pointer on the nex play. The half ended with Latta leading 33-12.
The second half began with Hannah-Pamplico having the same luck as the first half … unable to connect on shots. Rianna Green, Latta’s #10, was fouled and made one of her foul shots. She again was fouled and again made one of her foul shots. On Latta’s next offensive play, TaKeria Legette hit a long 3, and shortly thereafter Koesha James hit another 3 for Latta.
It appeared that everything was going Latta’s way. Hannah-Pamplico’s #20 hit one for 2 points and was fouled; she added another point that seemed difficult for Hannah-Pamplico to acquire. The Vikings’ Koesha James hit one for 2 points before Arica Gandy laid one in for another easy 2 points.
Latta was having no trouble scoring. TaKeria Legette again was fouled and sank 1 of 2 free throws.
Latta continued to score as Iyonna McKenzie hit one for 2 points while Hannah-Pamplico seemed unable to score. Koesha James, #15 for the Vikings, was fouled and made one of two from the charity line. It was now Moya McDuffie’s turn to score for the Vikings; she hit one for 2 points.
After three quarters, Latta’s lead was 50-15.
Cierra Sullivan scored the first points for Latta in the final period when she hit one for 2 points. Moya McDuffie sank one of two free throws to add to Latta’s already overwhelming lead. The Vikings’ Rianna Green hit a 2-pointer before #21 for Hannah-Pamplico hit one for 2 points.
Rianna Green again connected for 2. Hannah-Pamplico’s #12 sank one for 3 points. On the next offensive play, Tamera Campbell of Latta hit one for 2 points and another one for 2 more points before TaKeria Legette hit one for 2. Everything was still continuing to go Latta’s way. TaKeria Legette passed to Iyonna McKenzie who scored 2. Koesha James for Latta was fouled and missed two free throws. However, there was a lane violation, and she was given another chance … she hit one. Hannah-Pamplico’s #23 hit one for 2 before Latta’s Koesha James sank one of two free throws after being fouled. Latta’s Moya McDuffie hurried down the court as time was expiring to lay in the final 2 points. Latta claimed the victory 73-22.
Latta was led by TaKeria Legette who scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had 14 assists, and 7 steals. Rianna Green had 14 points, 6 steals, and 5 assists.
Koesha James scored 11 points while Arica Gandy added 6 points and 11 rebounds. Tamera Campbell had 6 points, Moya McDuffie had 5 points while Iyonna McKenzie and Cierra Sullivan each added 4 points.
Hannah-Pamplico’s Timmons had 6 points, Rodgers had 5 points while Boyle, Blue, and Simmons each had 3 points. Pringles added 2 points.
Latta will host the next round of the playoffs tonight (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m.
