Road Sign Theft Costing County, Creating Danger

By Betsy Finklea
Director of 9-1-1 Clarence “Sonny” McRae said the county is experiencing a problem that is costing the county a great deal of money this year – the theft of road signs.
McRae said some people take the road signs for souvenirs, to hang in their bedroom, or just as general mischief without giving thought to the consequences. McRae said it is more than a financial issue, it could be a matter of life and death. McRae said emergency services personnel such as EMS, fire departments, and law enforcement depend on these signs to be able to locate places when they have a call for help. Missing signs can lead to long delays that could make the difference leading to a loss of life or property.
McRae said those individuals caught taking road signs will be prosecuted.
