Joe M. Edens, Jr.

Dillon – Joe Mood Edens, Jr., 87, died November 27, 2015 in Columbia, SC.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 30, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Eugen Bach officiating.  Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon is assisting the family.  

Mr. Edens was born in Dillon, SC on April 21, 1928, the son of the late Joe Mood and Minnie Usher Edens.  He began his career as a civilian for the United States Air Force, rising rapidly from administrative and fiscal positions to Auditor 

During the Korean Conflict he served four years as active military, including duty at Fairford Royal Air Force Station, England.  Upon Completion of his military service he returned to his civilian position with the Air Force Auditor General and was promoted to Supervisory Auditor in European District Headquarters, supervising audit activities in Spain, Africa, Italy, and Germany. 

In 1962, he was assigned to the Air Staff in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he directed world-wide audits of USAF activities.  He also served as a Technical Advisor for the Department of the Air Force in the making of a movie to recruit new college graduates into governmental auditing; set standards and curriculum for the Auditor General School for new auditors; and served on the Civil Service Committee for establishing grade classification standards for all Air Force auditing positions. 

He worked on special assignment with the office of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, on the first Department of Defense Cost Reduction Program.  He also worked with the Bureau of the Budget, Executive Office of the President, on implementation of the Recommendations of the President’s Commission on Budget Concepts.  He was appointed the first and only civilian member of the Auditor General Inspection Team, covering all levels of Auditor General Activities.  

He was a Certified Internal Auditor, and a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Federal Government Accountants Association. 

After his retirement in 1983 he moved to Winter Park, Florida, until 1986 when he returned to Dillon, SC where he resided at 401 East Washington Street.  He was a member of Kentyre Presbyterian Church. 

He is survived by his godson, David Michael Crumlich (Mary Catherine) of Columbia, SC; “grandchildren”, Zachary and Noah of Columbia, SC; and sister, Gloria Edens Vierse of Copparas Cove, TX.  He was predeceased by his brother, Melvin Edens.
