Annexation was discussed at the July meeting of the Dillon City Council.
The discussion was held because it was stated that some council members had been asked about it.
City Manager Glen Wagner explained that if a property (not the building) is located outside the city and it changes ownership, it must annex into the city before they can get utilities.
Wagner said this has always been the city’s policy extending back to the late 1980s. Wagner said on September 10, 2007, they put it in ordinance form.
Councilman Phil Wallace said he wasn’t aware of the ordinance. He said he certainly wanted everything annexed into the city that they can.
Wagner said the city council can change the ordinance.
Wallace asked what kind of revenue they can get out of that kind of property. Genwright said they would get a property tax and business license.
Wagner said they had this issue come up on 301 N. 10-12 years ago, and they annexed because they wanted utilities.
Wagner said he wanted the council to have some talking points He said they can change the ordinance, but it will require tow readings.
Wagner said this is something that all cities do. “It’s how you grow,” Wagner said.
