Sports Roundup: Love Still Headed to Charleston

Latta’s John Kever Love confirmed that he is still committed to the College of Charleston this week after the announcement that Coach Monte Lee would be heading to Clemson. Love said he was still anxious to play for Charleston and is eager to work with new coach Matt Heath.

Love was a standout at bat and on the mound for the Vikings and led the team to their first state baseball title since 1966. He earned Player of the Year honors in his senior season, finishing with 12 wins and an ERA of 1.48, striking out 123 batters in 89.2 innings. At bat, he had 45 hits, including 10 doubles, for an average of .464 with 38 RBI.

Love signed with Charleston in November 2014 after helping the Vikings to back-to-back state title appearances in 2013 and 2014. Love was also a standout for Florence Post 1 in American Legion baseball, going 8-1 on the mound with 55 strikeouts in his last season with the team.

Love was also selected for the North Carolina-South Carolina Select game, helping the South Carolina Sandlappers to 6-5 and 7-4 wins over the Tar Heels.

The North-South All Stars played on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13 at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC. On Friday, the North shut out the South 12-0 in the 2A/3A game, while the 1A/4A game saw the North defeat the South 10-4.

On Saturday, the consolation bracket featured the 1A/4A South team versus the 2A/3A South team, with the game ending in a 7-7 tie. In the championship bracket, the 1A/4A North team defeated the 2A/3A North team 6-2.

Dillon’s Patrick Herring played for the South’s 2A/3A team.

Dillon’s Jamison Chapman and Adonis Sealy recently attend a prospect camp at East Carolina. Chapman completed the 40-yard dash in 4.42 second and benched 225 pounds 17 times, picking up his first two offers from Wofford and Gardner-Webb. Both Wildcats were All-Region picks and were key players in helping Dillon win their third straight state title.

Former Wildcat Jamie Callahan is 0-5 on the mound after 14 games in his second season with the Greenville Drive. Callahan has struck out 38 batters in 39 innings pitched, giving up 55 hits, 19 walks, and 34 runs. Greenville is second in the South Atlantic League Southern conference with a 38-32 record.
