Lady Wildcats Claim District V Title, Fall to Yellow Jackets in Lower State

Dillon’s Lady Wildcats earned an 8-1 win over Barnwell on Wednesday night to claim the Class 2A, District V title and advanced to the first round of lower state playoffs where they fell 6-0 to Andrews.

On Wednesday, Barnwell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Dillon picked up five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Wildcats sealed the 8-1 win with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Shaquailla German pitched a complete game no-hitter, giving up three walks and striking out 14. Kelsey Brown took the loss for Barnwell, pitching three innings for eight hits, five runs, five earned runs, two walks, and one out.

At bat for the Wildcats, Da’Kerhia Samuel went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two stolen bases; Tori Grimsley went 3-for-4; Brittany Miller went 2-for-4 with two RBI; and Auh’Kieria Smiling went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

On Friday night, Dillon hosted Andrews in the first round of the lower state playoffs and fell 6-0 to the Lady Jackets.

Andrews took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on throwing errors and ended the inning 3-0. The Yellow Jackets picked up a run in the top of the third and added two more in the fifth for the win. Four of the runners who scored reached on walks.

Dillon got into scoring position on two occasions. In the third, the Brittany Miller and Adoshia Graves both reached on errors and advanced with a stolen base to put runners on third and second. But with one out, Yellow Jackets pitcher Kirby Evans struck out the next two batters to end the threat. The other time occurred in the sixth, when Shaquailla German reached on a walk and advanced on errors and a passed ball to reach third. But the Wildcats couldn’t get a quality hit in the inning, with three fly balls leaving German stranded at third.

In the fourth, German got a base hit and Tori Grimsley made a sacrifice bunt to advance German to second. But Erin Bailey and DA’Kerhia Samuel both flew out to end the inning. Samuel got a base hit in the seventh but Miller hit into a double play that took them both out. Johnna Rogers drew a walk, but Graves grounded out to third to end the game.

Kirby Evans got the win on the mound, pitching a complete game for two hits, three walks, and eight outs. Wildcat pitchers Shaquailla German started and Tiffany Dwyer pitched two innings for a combined total of six hits, six runs, two earned runs, four walks, and 10 outs. Dwyer had two outs in her two turns on the mound.

At bat for Andrews, Brooks Cribb went 2-for-4 with two RBI; Sereana Fisher went 1-for-2 with three runs scored, also reaching on two walks; Malorey Morris went 1-for-3 with one run scored, also reaching on a walk; Elise Bruce went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, also reaching on a walk; and Brooklynn Brewington went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.

At bat for the Wildcats, Shaquailla German went 1-for-2 and also reached on a walk; Da’Kerhia Samuel went 1-for-3; Johnna Rogers drew two walks; Tori Grimsley made a sacrifice bunt; Brittany Miller reached on an error; and Adoshia Graves reached on error with one stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.

Dillon falls to 17-6 overall and was scheduled to face Johnsonville on Monday night in an elimination bracket game while Andrews was scheduled to face Aynor in the winners’ bracket.
