Playoff Update: Viking Teams Stay Alive in Lower State Playoffs

Both the Latta baseball and softball teams managed to avoid elimination with wins on Wednesday night, earning a shot at the Class A lower state titles.

In Class A baseball action, Latta earned an 11-1 run-ruled win over Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s Red Raiders on Wednesday night in Latta. Bamberg got their only run in the top of the first, but Latta picked up four runs in the bottom of the inning and led the rest of the way.

John Kever Love got the win on the mound, pitching six innings for five hits, one earned run, three walks, and seven outs. Johnathan Ray and Jackson Williams both ahd triples and Caleb Mishue and Brady Hatchell each went 3-for-4 in the win.

Latta will now travel to face Hannah-Pamplico on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. The Vikings will need to win twice to claim the lower state title. Latta fell 12-7 to Hannah-Pamplico in their first encounter on Tuesday night.

In Class 2A baseball, Bishop England knocked off Waccamaw 5-2 to advance to the lower state championship. The Battling Bishops will travel to Dillon this Friday night to take on the Wildcats for the Class 2A lower state baseball title. Dillon only needs one win to claim the title, while Bishop England will have to beat the Wildcats twice.

SOFTBALL

In softball action, Latta’s Lady Vikings earned a 4-1 win over Hannah-Pamplico to stay alive in the Class A softball playoffs. The Raiders scored their lone run in the bottom of the first, but Latta picked up three runs in the top of the third and one in the fifth to seal the win.

Dori Webster got the win on the mound, pitching a compelte game for five hits, one earned run, two walks, and 10 outs. Madison Owens and Kyra Grant both had triples, and Macy Hyatt doubled in the win.

Latta will travel to East Clarendon on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Vikings will have to win twice to claim the lower state title. Latta fell 7-3 to East Clarendon in the first round of the lower state bracket.
